For you guys that did a swap...SBC, etc....and kept a manual tranny in there, how did you work around the bell crank setup on the 800? Right now I have a T98 wide behind the 304 and if I go to a SBC and SM465 instead of an auto, that would be the biggest issue I see to wrangle with.
I already changed the mount of the bell crank support from the engine block to the firewall with a custom bracket/pivot thingy, but I assume a hydraulic T/O assembly would be the answer, just not sure how to interface the two.
Perhaps this is one reason most folks stick an auto in there, but I really like the gear ratios with the Tera Low D20 I put in there.

For me it was just easier to go with the 465 behind a 350 then adapt the IH dana 300 :grinpimp: The clutch is 12'' hydraulic with the master and slave being V8 jeep. I don't know about keeping the IH 4 speed but I have seen it done. However I'm not sure mixing the clutch/flywheel is the best way. Find yourself a 2wd 465 (for the 35 spline) and pick up the AA kit to bolt them up (465xD20) for about 600$ shipped :smokin:

Sorry...perhaps I was not clear. I don't want to keep the T98. I would use an SM465 adapted to the D20 I have. I imagine that a hydro cluth is the answer, I was just wondering how this was retrofit to the 800. I am not that familiar with hydro clutches, but I assume there is some kind of master cyl at the firewall?
Just wondering what parts, struggles are involved in this set-up.

OH OK......:rasta:
Well the first thing I did was find an early 60's Scout 80 firewall plate because they have the brakie master and the clutch master mounts already there. If you dont have one I am sure you could make one :flipoff2: The clutch master I used was off a jeep cherokee V8 as was the clutch slave. Now you could use A chevy slave (1/2 the $) but my headders hit the 1'' longer chevy slave.
The hard part of all this is finding the rare chevy bellhousing with the clutch slave mounting tab on it (should be pics under "Phase 3 of my build")
Once you have found these parts the rest is just NAPA parts hydraulic shift fork, 11mm brake line, and fluid. One more thing that I never got and just made my self was the 1/2'' rod between the slave and the fork. So I cut the 1/2'' rod to 4 3/32'' to match the factory and seems to work fine...
As far as how well it fits in the tunnel? I think it depends on how you place the motor. If you look under my build you will see I went 6'' down and 4'' back when compared to the factory 304 IH. This put the clutch/shift fork just below the body in the tunnel....The hard part was the slave to headder clearence..if I could do it again I might try 73-87 2wd Hooker full length cuz they woked on a buddys scout better.
I hope I was some help.....Josh

Ahhh...now I see why guys go to an auto:p Not exactly REALLY hard, but kinda a pain, huh.
That was helpful. I am just thinking out loud in case I end up not selling the beast.
