: Electric fans at higher elevation

I am trying to decide what fan setup to use.

1. I have heard electric fans do not pull enough air through at higher elevations ex: mountains of Colorado. Any opinions on this?

2. Would running an electrical fan and a flex fan be overkill?

3. Also wanting opinions on fan clutches

Tube buggy. Ramjet 350 and automatic transmission.

1.)I run an electric fan in colorado. It pulls enough air to keep my straight 6 cool using a 4cyl radiator. It really depends on what type of fan you get. I have only ever run flex-a-lite fans, and they move insane amounts of air.

2.) Many new vehicles now come with an engine driven fan as well as an electric. However, if you feel the need to pull this much air, you might want to look at a bigger radiator.

I dont see how it matters if its an electric or clutch fan in higher elevations. The air is thinner and is going to effect either fan the same; the air has no favorites.

I *heard* that using and electric fan in front of a belt driven fan will actually have less airflow than using just the belt driven fan. The reason is because the electric fan doesn't move as much air as a belt driven fan and acts as a restriction. I use have a belt driven fan with a clutch (on a chevy 383) here in the mountains and haven't had a problem at 13,000 foot trails yet. I perfer the belt driven fans due to the lack of things to fail compared with the electric fans.

Skip the flex fan( drag racing only ), they don't pull enough air. Go look a new Chevy pickup. electric only.
You need to have a good/big alt. if going electric. Either one needs a fan shroud to help pull more air in. I like the belt drive too. The fan clutch can go out and not work as good when new. I have no clutch on my 68 pickup and it stays cool will a new big 3 core rad. Of course it will chop your fingers off too:eek:  ( just have some repect and turn the engine off)
