: Q. about IH truck axles

Found an International truck in a field and took a look at the axles, pretty positive that it has a 60 in the rear and a 44 front, but the guy said it was 60 front also. the axle tubes are bigger than the 44s in my wagoneers, but it had 44 stamped in the housing?

Does anyone know off the top of their head what it would be?

It is a 1975 model with a 345 and the axles are 8 lugs.
Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Just be aware the year which you asking about has alot of "grey" areas. First off it was common held belief that IH never used a 60 front, only a closed knuckle 70 or open knuckle 44 (early models had a closed knuckle 44). However there is Dana literature that specs a front 60 for the 75 model year, and even gives a BOM, however NOBODY has been able to find one or provide pics. Being that it is stamped 44, it's a 44.

So you can't tell the difference between a ball joint and a king pin?

If it has disc brakes then it is mostly likely a 44 out of a 74/75 series

Rotors for the axles are very $$ and suitable donors are out there, but it takes some searching.

or you just run what on there, and when they wear out you swap in more common GM stuff...

Good find actually, the '74/'75 open-knuckle, disc brake stuff is sort of rare (only 2 years). The width is typicaly nice as well, wider than scout, but not as wide as GM "Full Width".

This is the best reason for not running the front, stock replacement axle shafts are very hard to locate.

Buy it and part it out to some sucker on the binderbulletin. Then take the cash and build good axles.Maybe a HP 44 or something.

They have poor brakes.Yesitsa 60R but they aren't the best either.More brake issues and thin spindles.Sell the stuff to a collector.

Thanks for all the info guys. I will most likely run them till I get the rockwells. They are going under a CJ7 so you think they will hold up to 38s and a 304?

on a Jeep I'd think so. The IHC trucks/Travelalls are heavy mofos. Regearing is gonna be a must it probobly says 3:73, 3:90, 4:09 or 4:11(sorry cant remember. But thats it, so 38s you'll want 4:56 or higher numericaly.

OK... Got it out of the truck finally. Home and it's all tore down. I am going to do a disc swap first. Going with the BTF weld on brackets. Are the hubs and drums a press fit from factory or am I goin to have buy new hubs?

So if it takes you 2.5 years to pull axles how long is your build going to take :flipoff2:

The hub and drum seperate.

I did a disk brake conversion on the same axle about 3 years ago - very straight forward and just like any other rear D60.
