i found a FORD sb bellhousing w/ the standard butterfly 4 bolt pattern in a junkyard the other day. my question is, what did it come out of? the part number is D9ZC 6394 BA.

for those who can correct me:

1979 Mustang Drivetrian part(bellhousing)

is that what i'm understanding those #'s to mean?

if so, why does it have the correct t18/np435/t150 tranny bolt pattern? and can i use it w/ a my 1990 EFI 302 to Ford T18? i've been told that the bellhousing, flywheel and starter ALL have to be from the same year vehicle to work w/ each other. if that is the case, then i can't use a '79 flywheel w/ a newer 50 oz balance 302. is this correct?

thanks a lot-russel

The 4-bolt pattern for the trannies are all the same after '65. the problem is the flywheel may be 157 tooth and not the 164 tooth you're expecting for a truck aplication. The other difference is that the input bearing retainer has at least two different sizes for car vs truck aplications.
You can mix and match different year flyawheel/starter/bellhousings. the 157 tooth is car only( well, mostly), among trucks there is the 164 tooth flywheel, The starters for Auto and Stick are the same unit BUT the Aluminum nose piece that the drive gear is held in IS different . Just unbolt the nose piece and switch it among starters to fit. The mustang bellhousing is not likely to work.

No, you can not use the '79 flywheel 'cause it is 28 oz ballance.

yeah, the stang bellhousing is about 1" deeper than the truck one.

i've got another ? though. can a 1980's bellhousing work w/ a 50 oz flywheel and a newer starter?

do i need to use an older starter and the newer bell or will it not work at all?

thanks a lot- russel
