Was at the boneyard today, saw a Wag at a distance.. got closer, saw a "360" logo on the side, a closed knuckle dana 30 frontend, offset 44 rear. I Looked on the underside of the jeep, and found a TH400 (round bellhousing), mated to a Dana 300. Checked the info tag on the inside of the drivers side door, and it says it was built in 1972... hmmm
I thought they didnt even make the dana 300 back then? I dont know all the details or where to find a date code about the 300. The TH400 I can see being behind the 360, but all of that being mated to a dana 300 was odd, especially under a 1972 wag. So is this a good find? Or am I on crack?? If its good, how much is an AMC TH400, mated to a dana300 worth?? What if the d300 is a short shaft version? Thanks for the input!
You sure that's what you saw??
I find it hard to believe anyone would put a 300 in there with an offset rear axle. Wait... I've seen worse stuff, so I suppose someone has done it.

dana 30 came stock up til 73, and the xcase might've been a dana20. those were put behind the th400 from 65-73. the th400 was the stock tranny from 65-79.
mo: most FSJs with the dana 20 had an offset rearend (3" to passenger side; my cherokee is like this). the qtrac rearend is offset either 8" or 9", can't remember right now.

Im sure it was a TH400... it had Hydramatic embossed on the tranny pan... as for the xfer case, what tipped me off to it being a 300 was the two rails to shift it, and that "oil pan" on the bottom with a drain plug. and the dana logo was where i have always known it to be on a 300... i could be wrong, considering i have never seen a dana 20. Anyone have a pic of one?
What you saw was a Dana 20, not a 300. They also have the two shift rails, the pan with the drain, and Dana stamped in the same place as a 300. The 300 wasn't in existence yet in '72.

The best way to tell them apart is scrape the crude off of the tail housing and shifter ears...they will be alm. on the 300 and cast on the 20.

ive got a 400 and a d20 sittin at the shop still in a 73
the rear was offset because of the gas tank if you crawl under the driveshaft is off at an angle right against the tank. you can swap tyhat into something with a center dif.

That was a D20 tcase. Like someone else posted, they are very similar, but with a cast output housing. Also, there is no such thing as a closed knuckle D30. That would have had a D27. The cover is the same as a D30, but they are different internally.
