: desiel rubicon
jeenjer 03-18-2002, 06:54 PM This new jeep rubicon they're comming out with looks pretty sweet with selectable lockers and the 4 to 1 T-case. but I would be really impressed if the put their cummins desiel in it. They're getting close to manufactered perfection, just throw that desiel in there, switch the 44's for 60's and add a lift to clear 35's and I'd say they had it.:usa:
CJ-Jeeper 03-18-2002, 07:00 PM You forgot to mention lengthening the engine compartment about 10"
orbitcat 03-18-2002, 10:42 PM Not to mention a nose wheel when it falls on it's face from the weight!
Mcstiff 03-18-2002, 10:55 PM Cummins does make a 4 banger version
oiler 03-19-2002, 01:05 PM There is a guy at The Turbo Diesel Register that put a cummins 4bt in a tj, he loves it. I would with out a second thought by a jeep built like the one above. I have a diesel scout and really like it off the road, has good kreeping power. Not much in a drag race though.
Cutter 03-19-2002, 02:56 PM the guys at Big Billy Barret Jeep here in Dallas say that the Rubicon has been killed. The bean counters got to it:( If this is true then the poser four by's are all the future holds for the US market...
Mcstiff 03-19-2002, 03:19 PM I hope the Rubi is not dead. I still have to think that we will start to get real 4x4s once SUV's become more car based. What trucks in the US come with the 4cyl cummins turbo? It might be an intresting swap into a jeepster.
aaronlosey 03-19-2002, 03:20 PM first of all, all dealerships have their heads up their collective @sses. i wouldn't believe them if they told me jeeps came in red. with that aside, go to jeeps website and they have a contest to win a rubicon. they are advertising rubicon. they are building rubincons. i'd say if the whole thing got that far into production, they already have the infrastructure for it ( or they wouldn't give them away ), and have spent that much on advertising for it.... i think its coming out is my point
Cutter 03-19-2002, 04:03 PM they will still sale ya a 'Rubicon' soon. But will it be what we were told it would be, or will it just be a sticker on the hood? DC still says that none of the specifications are final. The cool transfer case and lockers will be the first to go... but hey, ya get a lame decal :flipoff2:

They are great guys (were real helpful when i was looking for a 6.5 for my jeep) and that is a very good price, considering it will bolt up to any chevy tranny or use the sm465 that comes with it.
kerryphillips 03-20-2002, 08:08 AM :D well that last post looks like it came right off the tdr web site....:D
kerryp
DieselYJ 03-20-2002, 08:10 AM :D Actually I stole it off of the Dieselpage website, but it might have originally came from TDR, I have no idea. :D
Scouter 03-20-2002, 09:49 AM There is a guy in the Sacramento area with a Cummins 6 in his CJ7.

WTF! couldn't he find anything heavier??? that's just stupid:p
DieselYJ 03-20-2002, 10:39 AM I could be wrong, but by the looks of that CJ, it does not see too much off-road.
So to answer your question-the pavement at the mall dont care how heavy it is!!!!
attachcurrie 03-20-2002, 10:40 AM What is the advantages to having a desiel in a crawler?
Mcstiff 03-20-2002, 10:46 AM Lots of torque

and while everyone else is out wheelin, thier tow rigs can be a source of spare engine parts.:D
jeenjer 03-20-2002, 02:19 PM That 6 cylinder cummins can't weigh too much more than a 454, caddy 500 or a V10. I think it's a good idea and if i could afford it I'd throw on in and help pull out all the "light" 4 bangers when they don't have enough power. :D

Not my cup of tea, but I have seen it on the Rubicon a couple of times.
Mr.RatBastard 03-20-2002, 02:45 PM I am not gonna run out and get 1 but I think I would choose it over a BB.It's kinda cool.Too heavy..... counter balance it w/a 14 bolt and big tires and the correct springs.....unless you plan on walking around w/it on your shoulders.....that might be easier w/a 2.5 :flipoff2:
I drive a Cummins TD, 24 valve, 6 cyl. in my truck. The engine with no trannie weighs over one thousand pounds! (1078). A Jeep frame could not take the weight, let alone the springs, hangers, axles, bearings. I've had a lot of diesels in my time, including an '80 Scout Traveller with factory Nissan 3.3L, 6 cyl.TD. It was cool doing the Rubicon and Ershim, but still a boat anchor of an engine with 101 neck snapping HP, and it weighed 900 lbs.
One of the Rock Crawling competitors ('Lil Smokey) has a Jeep with a 4 cyl. Cummins TD tied to an SM420. It seems to have plenty of torque and not weigh so blamed much. Not much in the pickup department though.
My favorite diesel to swap into a jeep would have to be the 3.9L, 6 cyl, Isuzu, TD. An SM420 will bolt right up to it. Not as heavy as the above engines. Lots of low end torque for rock crawling.
regards, as always, jefe
Po' riggity 03-21-2002, 01:23 AM Ive given some thought to sticking the 4 cyl deisel in my junk. Anyone know the weight?
Scott
strong_like_tractor 03-21-2002, 11:15 AM My Diesel SuperDuty weighs amost 1000lbs more then the same truck with a V10. From the Cummins sight a 3.9ISB weighs 773lbs dry.
JP
WillyPete 03-21-2002, 04:52 PM caddy 500s are actually the lightest BBs, IIRC
something like 580 lbs fully dressed i think.
454s are over the 700 lb mark i think (not all the "i think"s? :flipoff2:;) )
plus there's some caddy BB specialty shop that you can get aluminum heads, manifolds, etc from. that might get you into the low 500s.
cummins 6 is too big for anything but a full size jeep (there's some guy on www.ifsja.org who runs a m715 with a 6). the 4 sounds kinda sexy tho.
peace

You guys have convinced me...It cant be done
erikrs301 03-22-2002, 10:00 AM I'll tell you why you'll never see a diesel. It's because all the pinko hippie greenies don't like them. We're lockuy to still 6cyl's. If we left it up to them we'd all have electric cars with 13" wheels. F' the greenies, pollute it all and let my kids deal with it after I'm dead. :D
Bash or praise the Rubi, at least DCX is making an attempt to build a trail ready vehicle and not another watered down SUV...but then they are making that extended WJ, Compass, and those couple other pieces of shit.
strong_like_tractor 03-22-2002, 10:53 AM The probelm with all those non educated pinko hippies, is just that . They think that a diesel pollutes more because you can see the particulates; what they don't realize is that diesel emmisions degrade less overtime then gas emmisions, which results in the formation of less greenhouse gasses.
JP
Magoo 03-24-2002, 01:55 PM The point is that all emissions degrade! God knew what he was doing when he made the earth. Even if we set out to destroy it we couldn't do it. Look at Japan we :nuke: it and it is still here! The greenies don't want us to think that way otherwise they will lose their influence and influence = POWER!:mad3: Ever wonder why greenies won't come up to us out in public and confront us? They can't even defend themselves in an honest debate.
mtndewmaniac 03-24-2002, 04:06 PM First off. The new Jeep Rubicon is a great concept vehicle, holds true to jeep heritage while providing advancements that the targeted consumers are wanting. Takes OEM to the next level. Who knows, if this concept does actually see production, then others will follow, thus once again, putting Jeep in the forefront of new technologically advanced standards. Also its costs couldn't be that much more than what you'd find an average family sport-ute. Definitely more practical for my use.
As to the oil burners, I would vote for the Cummins 4BT due to its lighter weight while proving ample torque at lower RPMs required on some obstacles. My only question would be as to how the 4BT does when towing or pulling a trailer over mountain passes. I'm sure that matching the power band to gear ratios play a huge part.
And as to the Greenie Weenies, I'm MORE THAN SURE that they help contribute to the very same problem that they address, by buying these bus-sized family SUVs, or by commuting in a petroleum based vehicles for extended periods. Sorta makes them hypocrits as I see it.
