: Crawling 80's?

A friend of mine has a Venezuelan-spec FZJ80 in the US (don't ask), and we were discussing crawling options. I couldn't think of a better crowd to run my hypothetical scenario by and get some feedback.

Details are sketchy but I am convinced the 5-speed transmission in this truck is an H150F, which I believe was used in the US on V6 4Runners...correct?

The transfer-case is a *part-time* case that uses a dash-mounted switch to engage the 4HI, similar to the FJ62 setup.

Here are my questions. From a quick glance, I think he's got the space under there to run dual cases, although there are issues with clearance of the fuel tank. Couldn't he run dual Marlin cases or All-Pro cases, assuming they mate up to the transmission? Are they offered for the H150F? Second, in the event that he doesn't have the clearance for the dual cases, what are the odds that he could get 4.7:1 gears for his existing case? I suspect that it's very similar to the case used in the US behind the 4Runner 5-speed, but I can't be sure. Are 4Runners equipped with the vacuum/electric solenoid activated 4HI as well?

Looking forward to your comments, I think this kid's truck has the potential for some serious crawling....

I am 99.9% sure that the V6 mini truck uses the R150F tranny, not the H150. The R150 has a first gear of 3.8 versus the 4.5 of the H150F. I thought that the H150 came behind the 1HZ motor? I thought that the 1FZ came with the H151F tranny with the 4.0 first gear. Maybe Rick D. will back me up. As to the gearing issue, maybe the Aussies might have a solution, seeing as they get the tranny there.

I'm not so concerned with which gears the tranny has, I want to know whether it's compatible with US-spec t-cases, and thus with the options available for the mini truck world!

henry-

H15X is the big ass tranny found in 80 series only. Shifter engages into main cavity of tranny.

R15X is the compact tranny which the shifter actuation is in a rear sub housing. This is in HZJ79 mine trucks, Tundras, etc in some form.

I can check gaskets etc in morning. There might be a mate, but with a H series tranny it's a huge questionmark.

So basically, he better *pray* that he's got some variation of the R15X for my idea to work?

I wonder if he could just mount an H55F to his carburated 1FZ (did this combination even exist? I'm not sure, I don't think so...)? That would open his truck to options currently available for the 60 series...

Sometimes it SUCKS to have a non-US Cruiser, I hope some of the yahoos who are always daydreaming about them read this....I'm having visions of my stock Dana 60 (that's right, folks, my FJ62 came STOCK with a Dana 60...but it was a semi-floater, same width as a Cruiser axle, with the diferential offset to the passenger side like a Cruiser axle)...

Sorry, just read my post and I guess I didn't make my point clearly. The mini truck and Cruiser trannies are different. I am pretty "sure" that a mini transfer will not mate to a H151 tranny. But only way to tell is to look at them physically. I have pics of both I can email to you, if that would help.
