2 years in the making of the big bad scout. Saw mechanos at rubicon through gatekeeper, but was not parked on my side.:flipoff2:
Also saw Sjscouter when I was on winch hill 1 duty, I was parked because I broke both dana 60 studs for spring u bolt plates that weekend, Ih4ever was in same group.
Scout on hold right now, waiting for better high steer arms, bent two chev 1 ton tie rod ends in the last couple months. Also, too many vehicles in yard that need attention.

11-01-2005, 03:58 PM
:) yeah, BenW's scout looks just like mine, probably same red oxide primer too.
U guys mention rear seat, I also have a stock 68 scout800 rear seat that fits in mine. My 63 scout took 2 long years of building, I did all the fabrication and installation on it at home.
Scout is only sitting right now because of wait for BTF to send my new 60 high arms. Full roll cage is planned before next summer, but have to make it fit for 1/2 cab during winter months, also working on alum. gas tank for more capacity, the Truckavenger drinks up the gas with 40's and 4.88's and
5600 lbs of weight. I will post more specs when get off work, have to pay off scout parts.

Hello again MochaMike, yeah I was with Abba on winch hill #1. I probably have some pics of your rig coming through sierra trek, also have more pics of scout group coming through gate keeper. :D
That was my 1st sierra trek with the scout, been building it up. I have been working on getting the bugs out...... broken 60 outer axle shaft, two front 60 ubolt studs, twisted the rear gm 14 bolt tube, two chev 1 ton tie rod ends, and added hydralic assist. to turn those 40's.:grinpimp:

Cool, email me if you find them. I think I have some too, but no pix server access any more...

Asside from Hollister in March, that was my rigs maiden voyage...
Only carnage was broken rubber motor mount, then a broken weld to same mount (bad design from P.O.).

i will have to talk to a club member to see if he made a CD with all the pictures that were taken during th sierra trek this year then i could post more pics up on here.

Brian where is my dads 62 scout?? and how about that j$%p??
he wants it ready within the next two sierra treks. :flipoff2:

U litttle $*@!$#, that can of primer is stored in the garage now. I had it in the scout when I was working on the interior, and used that as a joke of painting the body on the trail. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Hey Brandon, I did cut out the orig x-member and fabbed another behind the frt bumper. The ps box is a saginaw800 series, later swapped for a PSC box. Also swapped in a tilt-telescoping caddy column with Borgeson u-joints on the steer shaft. Had to create two new front body mounts since I chopped out the stock rad. mount. Will have some pics of engine bay later tonight if needed.:)

11-02-2005, 10:37 PM
That's funny, I used to live in Elk Grove. The scout passed through there after sierra trek ended.:) The booster was fabbed to the stock mount with a 88 3/4t surburban 2x booster, and yes i had to trim the fender a bit, but i boxed it back in to keep the mud out. Yes, I pretty much rewired the whole scout, except for the tail lights.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/PB010034.jpg

The con was fun, spent a whole week up there, drove both directions. Then saw reuben's group on last day at the gatekeeper:cool2:

Well the trip I had planed for a year came to soon for me to get all the stuff done at once. So I focused on the FI part of the motor swap, once I had that done I noticed that the suspenion was off (300 lbs off the nose) made thye front way high:shaking: So I added 56'' chevy leafs to the front and 63'' leafs to the rear....Anyway I made the trip without any problems other than having to pull the hood for heat issues...The plan was sm465(6.56) x toy(4.7) x 4.88=150.3 but I decided to keep my 300 and go with the 4.xx and 32 spline outputs. That gives me 6.56 x 4.00 x 4.88 = 130ish

For the trip I left the case alone I think it's 2.6 and that gave ma 85ish:(

I take a 20 x 1 loss but I think I just was going to be better for me in the end this way.....maybe

MY PARTS FINALLY SHOWED UP!
For those who are going to install or have a kingpin style front dana 60, this is the way to build the steering linkage.
The problem i had was from buying dana 60 hi-arms that only had one hole on them. This is the pic of the first set, (for sale by the way!:) )

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/PB010038.jpg

These worked fine until I actually went wheeling hard, and bent the 1 ton chev tie rod end. I thought it was nothing, and replaced it. But later it happened again.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/linespics289.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/PB030011.jpg

These are the new BTF arms that i just got...two tie rod end holes on the pass side arm....

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/PB030002.jpg

These are much thicker and stronger than the first set. These BTF arms still retain the king pin spring and yet get rid of the stock grease cap.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/PB030005.jpg

Hopefully this should cure my bent tie rod end issues:D Now I just need more time to install them......( I cant go wheeling yet!, still waiting on two more threaded bung ends for my tie rods.....)

I have never agreed with mounting the draglink to the tierod ~ I did it once then started having Bonz custom build longer arms to mount the tierod/draglink to seperate holes on the pass-side arm.

Besides the bending, they will swivel and cause what seems like play in the steering.:rainbow:

When you go wheeling, try not to pick a bad line!:p
This front outer dana 60 axle shaft snapped when i was high centered on a huge rock in nor-cal during the summer. Both rear tires were off the ground, and the front left was in a hole. Guess which side snapped when i started to drag the brakes trying to get the frt powerlock to engage.

monster mods??? you call those monster mods? what the hell are you talking about your scout is small:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :D

and josh, im 19 and i dont have enough money to buy a "tow rig" like brian:D and i dont have enough money to buy a honda to drive around in either. so for now i like to keep my truck local, for the most part, i dont mind going once a year to sierra trek, because i know no matter what happens i will get back home...

all i need is a new motor, some new axles, and a new paint job... but untill then i would like to keep my DD in one piece:p :p
