I need a little help. I came across a front axle from a 76 FJ-40 that has been set up for a SO. The guy I got it from couldn't tell me who did it, or anything else about it, but for the price, it was worth the chance.

Anyway, it appears to me that the knuckles weren't cut/turned, but what do I know. Where is the cut normally made?

Also, the perchs are slightly off from each other. The driver side perch is very slightly higher in the rear than the pax side. Here are some pics. Will this slight difference be that much of a problem. Should I just have the perches redone?

Finally, with the perches "level" the diff seems to point up slightly. This looks like its gonna point the diff towards the t-case, but what about the caster if the knuckles weren't turned? Should the perches be "level" once the SO is complete?

Am I just gonna have to put it all together to see what I got, or is there a way to make measurements to make sure of what I got, or to see if I'll have to tweak/redo it?

I still have the axle from my 76 parts rig that was gonna get prung over for my 75, so I still got that going for me!!;)

TIA

Sean,
I wouldn't worry about the perches yet, as that will be the least of your worries. It looks like it may have been turned, but it is hard to tell from the jpg. Measure the angles of the knuckle bearing race and the 3rd member mounting surface. In the stock config, ther are prroximately 90 degrees. If rotated, the 3rd member will be rotated up about 15-20 degrees.

So, you're saying I may have to redo them?

That's my impression when I first I got it, and when I looked at it compared to the 75 axle that is still on the car right now. I'll try to check it better tomorrow or Thur before I go back to work for the first time in 9 1/2 wks!! <BG>

BTW - I got an SM420 coming any day now!! $125!!

Thanks Charlie!
