When my buddy got his explorer 4x4 there was a sticker on it that said dont push this button ( being the 4x4 button) I dont know anything about auto locking hubs or fords. What could be his problem?

My guess is that it was put on there by the dealer so that nobody would test out the 4x4 on a test drive and have the shift motor crap out. I would push it and see what happens

Check out this page: http://www.explorerforum.com/Singleton/web/pages/tcase.html

It has info on diagnosing the system and rebuilding the shift motor if needed.

Push the damn button! Warn manual hubs are the greatest thing to ever happen to an explorer.. so put them on anyway. If it doesnt do anything when you push the button, have somebody push it over & over while you whack the shift motor with a rubber mallet or softly with a dead blow.

I'd be careful pushing that button since this IS a possibility.

Step one: Put truck in 4 lo.
Step two: Put truck in drive.
Step three: Listen for some crazy shit.

If you dont hear any crazy shit, see if youre actually in 4wd & go from there. You guys are making too big of a deal outta this. You'll feel it bind if the gears are different, & you cant fuck up the hubs unless theyre already broken. Ill bet the shift motor is tempermental & sometimes doesnt come outta 4x4 or something stupid..
