My friend is looking at an 1987 Crew Cab International S1754. It has a 9 litre diesel with an allison auto trans. I think that the engine is made by International and is somewhere in the range of 210hp. Is this engine NA or turbo? The current owner knows very little about it so I was hoping someone on here could offer up some knowledge on how the engine/trans. performed that year (or any year) or a previous experience with a truck like this. The truck looks clean but he would like to find out more about it before he buys it to haul his junk. Oh and he would be towing two rigs at most.
Thanks for your help.

Yes the engine is an International engine and comes in a variety of power options. The power rating is based off of injector pump spces. If you can find the Engine Model Number the first three digits should be the power at 2800 RPMS. Power options were 160, 180, 175, 180 Marine, 190 Marine, 210 Marine and 225 Marine. If you get me your injector pump part number and engine serial number I can tell you what power it makes.
The engine is NA, no turbo, and unfortunatly I don't have any torque humbers. The engines were used in many hauling trucks, it will probably pull your buddy's rigs just fine, and the crew cab option is pretty cool!
The Allison tranny should be one of the following AT-545, MT-643, AT-653, or MT-654-CR.
I really can't tell you anything else.

I don't have any personal experience with the International 9 liter. However when I was researching school buses I was told by everyone I talked to said to stay away from them. Don't know if this is true but I was told they don't last very long and are hard/expensive to rebuild. One old man who owns a schoolbus service said that they were only good if used as a deisel to noise converter. Oh I also ws tol that they are all NA.

No first hand experience, but I have heard alot of different mechanics say keep far, far away from the 9L.
If its in good shape, i say go for it, just go shopping for a DT466 to replace it when it dies. should be a fairly easy repower.

Towing a jeep or a pickup with a 9.0L with be easy. I've had a 1655 Oliver on the bed and towed a New Holland bale wagon behind a 9.0L and it pulled it great (5 speed stick with a two speed rear axle). The bad part about the 9.0L is longevity, but if it is in good shape it aught who knows it may last a long time. If I had a 9.0L and it died I'd find a DTA 466 to replace it without looking back. The auto may drag it it down some.

Hey guys - thanks for all of your input. My friend talked to the service rep at the local International dealer who promptly told him "Honestly, if it was my money, I wouldn't touch that shit". That pretty much did it for my friend. Apparently the 9.0 litres are difficult/expensive to fix and require a bit of down time while they order parts. Too bad cause the crew cab was sweet! Thanks again.

I would seriously consider buying it with the intention of installing a DT466 and not even worry about the 9L. The DT466 are not hard to find at all, very reliable, and can be modded to make some ungodly h/p.

Truck salvage yards, truck engine rebuilders (many on the internet), ebay, auctions (in equipment).
