: Isuzu Dana 44s and "oddball" ratios

I saw this thread on Pirate the other day:

Isuzu D44 thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40162)

Basically, a lower ratio gearset for a Dana 44 that will fit a high ratio carrier beyond the normal carrier break.

Does anyone know anything more about these lower than 3.73 gear sets for the high carrier? Is there something "funny" about the Isuzu D44 variant or will these gears fit in any D44 (say a Scout)?

This would solve a little gearing problem I am having without spending a lot of money - 4.30s in the diesel powered Sam would work great with a reduced t-case.

God damned Isuzu's are in the Pirate tech a lot lately. I'm seeing a trend. :D

Time to go find another oddball to drive. Gotta be different than the masses.

OX locker has done some investigating on the Isuzu Dana 44. I don't know the details but you could find out more by asking the same question on http://www.4x4wire.com/isuzu. Basically the Isuzu Dana 44 uses a much thicker ring gear similar to http://www.maxles.com. The pinion shaft is also bigger than the stock Dana 44 pinion shaft. That's about all I know.

Also the ARB RD07 fits the Isuzu Dana 44. So it can't be that far off from the original Dana design.

Thanks for the info!

So are you saying the Isuzu pinion gear has a thicker diameter shaft of that the Maxles version does (or both)?

It will fit, the carrier is the same only difference is the ring gear, TJ's also use the same ring gear in 4.10 ratio. When I regeared my Isuzu D44 to 4.88 the install kit had the wrong inner pinion bearing, difference being the outside diameter, I took the old one off and matched it with a new one from the parts store. So if you wanted to reuse the bearings you would at least need to get a new inner pinion bearing for your Scout D44.

edit: The same install kit worked fine on my front Waggy D44, the pinion shaft of the Isuzu was the same as the front just that the housing required a different bearing and race.

So when you went to 4.88 gears, did you change the carrier?

Where is the carrier break on the Isuzu gears - or is there one at all?

That is a whole different story that I would rather not get into :) The carrier break is the same as a standard D44. The factory just cheated a little bit so instead of stocking two different carriers they just used a thicker ring gear to save money. I know 4.10 has the thick ring gear do not know anything about the 4.30 or 4.56.

:)

From what I've posted at the 4x4wire board it looks like the `93-`97 Rodeo had 4.1 and 4.3 on the high carrier. Post `97 had other ratios like 4.56 but also had a larger pinion gear and will not fit in the older Dana 44 housings.

Pretty cool, 4.3 is plenty low for me in this application.
