: If you ever plan to run the CON read this
FLASHLIGHTMAN 03-19-2002, 10:14 AM I’m just passing on information…Just some crap to think about... this comes out to around 1 helo flight of crap per day during summer.
Copy of Del’s email to the FOTR mailing list:
Some of you have asked about the trail waste problem on the Rubicon (that we talked about at our last FOTR meeting). The current numbers we are looking at are:
35,000 visitor days during one summer period.
75,000 pounds of human waste generated.
It would take 70 helicopter trips to haul it out; or twice that many trips in the Unimog or other vehicle.
It's not accessible by normal means (big trucks to pump out pit toilets, etc.).
It's an awesome problem.
There are three ways in/out -- requires multiple solutions.
But it's one that we have to continue to plan for and address. The trail is much like a popular river rafting canyon -- one road; many visitors; no facilities; white flowers; environmental problems/concerns. So we continue to work with the counties, the OHV commission, and the control agencies that regulate our activities. I'll keep you posted on updates and ideas as we go along.

CannonBall 03-19-2002, 10:35 AM Think I'll have to start running it in one day, or just pop a bunch of imodium before I hit the trail! I think I can hold it for 3 days ;)

What you need is this, pack it/ pack it out :flipoff2:

Monkeyboy 03-19-2002, 10:41 AM I'm gonna fab up a crapper or buy one of them prefab porta crappers and use it
Then you can take about 35 -40 pounds off the pounds of poop quoted above for for one summer
DippStick 03-19-2002, 10:44 AM I wouldn't want to be anywhere near you if you rolled it :)

Monkeyboy 03-19-2002, 10:52 AM HAHAHA
the crappers not gonna be built into the Heep.
It's enough of a hassle with gear diff and motor oil when a rig rolls

Curtis 03-19-2002, 12:26 PM Do the owners of the Springs campground haul out all the shit deposited in their houses every year? If not, why? We pay a fee to camp there so they should atleast take care of that end.
Danger Ranger 03-19-2002, 12:42 PM Does anyone know if any of the big organized events (i.e. jamboree's rubithon etc) can be held accountable for any of this shit?
Monkeyboy 03-19-2002, 12:51 PM Very good question.
I wonder what these organized runs do for the waste management on the trail.

Very funny thread, but this stat just talked me out of going, at least in summer time. 350 people on the trail on an average day? That's not my idea of fun. I use my jeep to get away from it all. Is it that bad in fall and spring too?

That's private land, so they can easily take care of it on site.... especially since they have SOIL in that area.
The larger problem exists on the slab areas, where there is little soil. I have seen Jamboree staff moving shitter into and out of the Loon/Spider area, so they appear to be at least assisting with their waste.
Pemitted events, such as what JJ runs, are required by the land managers to submit plans before getting their permits. I can't speak for the specifics of an Eldorado National Forest plan/permit, but I do know that nationally, the BLM requires that waste be addressed.
Lest this spin out of control and become a bash-somebody-else thread, we need to work together. I don't care who you are, how much money you have, or how many days you spend on the trail, YOU need to pack your shit in, and pack your shit out. Don't get lost in whether somebody else's rig is shinier than yours, whether they have better bux than yours, or whether their porta-potty has thicker TP... the change starts with YOU.

Find soil and bury your shit. This wouldn't be an issue right now. I also can't believe some of the places some people crap on that trail. Amazing almost.

A lesson my dad taught me at an early age ... At the absolute least pack out what you pack in, if not more. And always put back what you move and leave no trace you were there. IF everybody did these two simple things EVERY time they hit the trails the :rainbow: Eco-Nazis would have hella less crap to talk and maybe we would have more trails to play on. And BTW, I know it sux to babysit the loser crowd, but IF you practice the part of packing out MORE than you pack in we will all look better.
:stepping off soapbox:
Curtis 03-19-2002, 09:06 PM I wasn't trying to push the blame on anyone else or bash anyone ;) I thought, and think, it is a legitimate question. It is nice to know that the Springs end is taken care of as it is atleast, and of course I am going to do my part :D
ranger 03-19-2002, 09:17 PM Make it manditory as part of wheelin gear to carry a pooper scooper and a turd sack! Just like your trash, you can carry it out with you....Or eat a pound of cheese before you hit the trail...:skull:
Bill4rest 03-19-2002, 09:32 PM I noticed when I was at spider that they had "porta poties" who maintains them???
