anyone actually busted one? I am trying to decide between the d300 and the 203/205 set up. I understand the rear output is the weak link on the d300? It also 100 lbs lighter and I can get the same ratio as the doubler for about the same price. I also don't have to change drive shafts for the 300. Eventually I will drop in a big block and it seems like the 300 would not hold up to that kind of torque...
Anyone running a high torque/hp block and a d300?? What is the input torque rating of the dana?
oh yeah an atlas is not an option :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

I've been hammering on my D300 for years without being able to break it.... FWIW

I saw one explode this weekend
Specs:
LT-1
4L60
D300
38.5 SX
Hillclimb, heavy foot..lot's of action. Totally shelled the output on the D300 and it subsequently took out the rear 3rd member too.
Nasty mess.

The output shaft is the weak link but you gotta be hammering on it hard to break it. Advance Adapters makes a hardened shaft for it but its bucks.
Do like Jeepskickass, he just carries a spare t-case with him. :flipoff2:

FWIW too...One of the SNORT guys blew up his front Atlas input on my course during Calrocs...everything breaks....

I think mine holds up fine...granted I don't even break my 44 front. I am hammer down wheelie/donut boy on the street though and it seems good to go.

the answer to the D-300 question depends on only one parameter = the size of wheel you are running.
if your wheel is up to 36" maybe 37", then you can hammer all you like and the chances of breakage are very slim. once you go 38" and up you are likely to break it, sooner or later.
with all due respect, you just cannot compare the D-300 to the NP-205 or even the 205-203 doubler. yes, the 205 is heavier and faster(1.96:1 compared to 2.61:1) but much much stronger, although both use gears and not chains.
coming to think of it, i have never seen a broken 205, but i have seen many busted D-300 = rear shaft mostly, but also the front one and even busted case!!
mind this - if you intend to run Boggers, then the safe size for a D-300 is even smaller and should not exceed 35".
i used to run 39.5" Boggers in the Frog before the 44"s, and for some time uses a D-300. i busted three of them very easily and on the hardest obstacles. once i blew the rear shaft and then immediately the front, which could'nt hold the pressure.
listen to experience!!! if you NEVER plan to go over 35" Boggers/36-7" other tires, get a D-300; if you think of going bigger any time in the future, drop it and go only for the 205 w/wout a doubler.
good luck

A guy i know with a J-10 p/u broke the rear output off of a d 300 3 separate times last summer. Course he was runnin a 360 ,t-18 (i think),d-300, 1 ton runnin gear, and 40 boggers on it. Plus he had a bad habit of high rpms and side-stepping the clutch if he got hung up in mud bogs. Definitely not a rocket scientist.
