Avoid the early (2003-2004) 6.0 Powerstrokes. Lots of problems, though less so with the 04s. The PS has the lowest output of the three diesels, and the lowest potential for power (without SERIOUS $$$). However, it is definately adequate for towing.
If you want a Ford, go with the 7.3 and mod it...or wait for the bigger 6.? PS in a year or two.
Ford had a better cabin, but with the new Dodge Megacab, it all comes down to preference.
If you are buying used and want a crewcab, Ford and Chevy are the only options.
GM has the best diesel auto trans, hands down. The Dmax is a pretty damn good motor, but it won't handle the power that the Cummins will. If you keep it stock, it'll run for a long time. If you bomb it, longetivity drops like a rock.
All you can really do, is find the truck you want. Drive everything, then decide what you need/like/hate.

BTW, the dowel pin is a $40, 45 minute fix. You can do it even cheaper if you buy your own stuff from a hardware store.
Lift pumps can be replaced by the FASS, and are a good idea.
Dodge autos suck, but you already know that...
