Looking at selling the tundra in the next couple months and upgrading. Been thinking about doing this for a while, but everytime I get the cash flow something big comes up.
Since diesel is so high now Im interested in seeing what kinda fuel milage you gas guys are getting. Specifically the V10's from Ford and Dodge. Just keeping my options open, cause you can get a much newer lower milage gas truck for the same as an older higher milage diesel 99% of the time.
And I know the gas engine wont last as long, but the next truck will only have to last me 2.5-3 years longer until I graduate, then once I get a real job I can get what I really want. I just need something bigger now to pull horses to rodeos and shows, and for around the farm stuff. Max loads 12-13k, I know a crewcab shortbed F-250 with a V10 and 4WD is rated at 10.5k I believe, I can squeek by by borrowing others diesels if I gotta tow over that.
Just thought Id keep my options open and check around a little.

That's some of my experience.
IMHO - stay away from the Dodge V10 - miserable mpg.
*if* you can keep it below 2k rpm on the Ford V10 - you can get 17-20 on a 2wd or 12-15 on a 4wd.
loaded up only dropped my mpg on both Ford V10's by about 1 mpg.

surprising your diesel numbers arent a whole lot higher....
so if you were to sell your current truck and get a new one, based on fuel prices combined with maintenance costs, what would be your choice? i figure your opinion can really count since youve had both.
what about trannys? did you ever have a problem if you had an auto behind the v10s?

My work truck is a 00 f250 with the v10. Long bed SC 4x4. While loaded with about 12k I never saw more the 7.5 mpg.

what was the lowest you ever saw with a load like that?
right now we have a 98 GMC 2500 ext cab long bed 2wd with a measily 350 that we have towed about 11000 lbs with twice and got around 7-8, doin 65. so im not expecting much better than that, diesel here is still around 2.75 where gas is down at 2.13 (what i paid this morning)

The lowest I saw was about 4.5 or 5 mpg. I would not get a gasser unless they improve a lot. Also when I was towing that much weight the truck wouldnt get out of its own way.

I know you are looking to get out of the Toyota but the new Tundra runs a lot stronger and more efficiently than the older version of the I-Force V8. I get 11-12mpg loaded to the GVWR (about 13500 pounds) and running at 65-70 mph.
But if you need to pull 10K than that doesn't help out much.

98' chevy 4x4 2500 350v8. Get about 11.9 around town, and 9-10 towing a 5000lb load at 70mph.

Sounds like he wants to PULL 10-12k... Not be at 13.5K ~combined~ (as you state)... With that load, he'll likely be at 17k combined? A guess of course.
That much load with a 1/2 ton, would not only be miserable, but a gut wrenching experience. It would also be irresponsible. Irresponsible wear and tear on the poor vehicle, and to the other drivers sharing the road.

I know you asked someone else... But if you asked me? I'd say a definate yes. Diesel all the way. The current price gap in fuel is temporary.
Here in Oklahoma we're already back down to about 2.35 diesel while reg unleaded is 2.05. Gap is shrinking.
Everyone's situation is different of course. You have to do some of your own math... But in my current commute and amount of towing, the diesel payback is relatively short. And the smiles per mile are high!

I can consistently get 14 mpg around town with my Ford 10. Empty on a road trip, the best I got was 18M mpg. Towing in town sucks the fuel. I got 7.24 mpg.

I've got a dealer up in my ass via e-mail, phone and carrier pidgeon....I'm really fighting the impulse to trade for a 2001 F-250 extended cab longbed 4x4 with V10 @ 95K miles. I am soooooo tired of my nice but relatively gutless 95 F-250 w/5.8 giving me 4.3 to 8 mpg depending on the trailer I pull. If I gotta get sorry gas mileage, I at least want the fawker to honk on down the highway with the load. And it embarasses the hell out of me every time I get stuck in a staging area.
This damned dealer is offering me the truck for $13.5K trade with no money up front and a damned cheap payment. Woe is me.:( [/HIJACK]

I have a 2000 F250 extra cab 4x4 with the V10. Bought it in 01 with 11,800 on the ticker. It now has 112,900. I average about 11 mpg for normal city/highway. I tow about 5000 lbs pretty much every weekend. It gets anywhere from 7 to 10 mpg depending on how many grades there are. I usually tow at 75-80 mph.
I know you asked about V-10s but....
Vortec 8100 Chevy w/ 4.10s. 14 mpg in town, 9-10 mpg towing 10 000 lb on the highway, 8-9 mpg towing in the mtns.
