I was wondering if anyone knew what the running gear is on a 1984 cheroke chief. I can pick one up for $300 but the engine is blown. I was thinking of stripping it for its running gear but I don't know what came stock on them.

It should have a D44 front axle AMC 20 rear axle the T-case could be either a NP229(selectrac) or a NP208 The tranny should be the A727..

XJ or FSJ? I'm think in 84, it would be an XJ, so it would have the 2.8 V6 or 2.5 4cyl. D30 front, D35 rear, 207 t-case. Is it AT or MT?

All that I know about it so far is that it has the six cylinder engine and an automatic trans.

If indeed you have the midsized XJ model, then the engine is a GM make, 2.8L V6. Auto tranny most likely the chrysler 904(30/32RH I believe), has the unique Chevy 4/V6 bolt pattern. Transfer case, if it's a selec-trac will be the NP229, if not then maybe NP207, NP228, (I believe the NP231 & NP242 didn't come till later) There is a Silver/Red tag on the backside of the T-case. May have to remove some sludge, but it's just above the speedo-cable. Front axle is a D30 reverse cut, selec-trac models use the vacuum/shaft-disconnect. Rear axle is a D35, not C-clip until @ 88-89 I believe.
Hope this helps, since I own a 84 XJ Pioneer Ltd. (power accys, loaded, etc. I've gotten to know these for the most part.
BIG upgrades are on the way.........:smokin:
