Just started yesterday, got it all torn down and started working on the spring mounts. Still gotta strip the rear axle housing down. Lots grinding so far!

I'll update pics and info as I go. Bare with me on this one, it'll probably take me a good month or more to complete.

Alright! Another tech article, waiting to happen...heh

Sweet start too...been toying with a 1/4 rear myself for a while. What springs you using?

Looks good!!
Jeff I am really interested in where you put your links and how much rear steer you are going to end up with...

I would love to move the cruiser rear end back a bit... And coilovers/coils/eliptic seems to be the best way...

I am using F-250 springs, but I'm gonna add one more leaf, cause alot of the buggies are using these same springs and weigh alot less than my cruiser.

I will (when I'm all done) have measurments of all the links and a tech article writen for the project. I'll do all the trial and error, and then let you all know what works and what does'nt.

Rear steer, thats what I want, so I will design it so that I get as much as it can handle.

Yeah I'm moving my axle back another 2-three inches too, so I will be around 100" wheel base. Besides, right now my rear shaft is really steep, infact too steep to use a CV and my rear pinion was at 26 degrees.

I am very interested to see how high your rig turns out. most of the 1/4 setups I see are so damn tall!!

Are you gonna design them around your 38's?

I'm gonna try, I really don't wanna have to change the front end around. Kinda weird doing this, having really no idea how high it's gonna sit. What if it ends up like 4" to low??? What will I do! LOL

Jeff, this is a dumb question: Are you going to keep it road-able? Do you tow it to the trail or drive it there?

I always trailer it, it has'nt been road worthy for years.

Thats what I'm hoping for! I want the rear end to work its way into what ever it needs to to get through an obsticle. Have you ever watched some of these competition buggies workin' it? They get a good amount of rear steer and the rear end just works.

Several "experts" on the General Board last summer were criticizing Lance's 1/4 elliptic suspension for having too much drop, too much rear steer and too little stability. The drop was easily fixed with limiting straps, and as for the stability and rear steer -- I think Lance's recent performance at Calrocs speaks volumes. Rear steer is bad on the road but great on the big rocks.

Jeff-- I suspect our systems are going to look a lot alike when completed. I hope to get mine finished in the next month as well. Keep us posted!

What kind of rear-end is that, it does not look to like a toyota.

Talk about timing!
I am going to be going this route in a couple of weeks as I am slowly getting my d60's ready for install.
I have to replace the rear half of my frame as the rust demons have won the battle :( so I will be starting from scratch and building it around the suspension.
Keep the updates coming !

Rear end is a Dana 60. Uddates will/should be up by Late Sunday. Currently I'm working on figuring out the proper geometry for the link bars. What a nightmare!!! ot as easy as it looks!

I don't really have alot to show right now, I've done alot of work in my head, but not so much on the cruiser. Today I'm going out to get some tubing material and some flat plate to plate the inner frame rails, then I'll get started on the upper and lower links. I've already prety much got it figured out where they will go, so it'll just be a fab fest! Here's a few pics of yesterdays work.

Yo jim- Don't worry man, theres a tech write-up on it pending for ih8mud.com where im SURE every little detail you could ever want to know will be explained and shown in detail, right Jeff?;) give the guy some time, like he said, its going to take him a few weeks as it is, the more we nag him to take pics, the less he can wrench on it.

This is true, I will write a fully detailed write up with tons of pics when its all done. Right now I'm waiting on my Rod ends and tubing, so it will be next week before I can continue with the project.

I also need to finish helping Dustin with his winch mount so that I can have him as my full time "Grinder Bitch"!!!

Jeff,

Got any kids.... Lego's? Working on a suspension set up, and how to set the links.... bingo, my son built a model with Lego's. Way cool... but we could move things around and get a pretty good idea of mounting point trade offs.

A buddy liked using CHALK on his shop floor to lay everything out. Perfectionist when it comes to machining & welding, he was ribbing me about the full size layout... makes it easier for him.

I've taken a lot of chit for my wooden models, but much nicer to spend an evening drinking a cold one and building up my stick figures with popsicle sticks. Decent demo on "C" sections versus box sections.

Only wish I had more hours in the month... I really could use a good TIG welding course. Hmm, maybe take two weeks off and spend them at Lincoln Welding School.... :D
