Hey more info! I'm not dogging you rustoleum but it looks to me that the drag link had a splice in the middle that pulled apart. It probably took more that a welder to straighten that tie rod?
Frametwister- just what is mangled? Might not be able to learn what to do but sure would learn what not to do :D :D

It broke in half , best bet for him was a high steer kit! Big tires, alot of skinny pedal, and "z" draglink dont mix!!!!! I like Scouts I just DONT like people that fix steering with duck tape!

Thats why most carry spares... hell I carry two fullsize spares and a highlift jack :flipoff2: ... the jack comes in handy when clowns start messing around the truck too ;)

these z bar drag links are all a bunch a death ride bull shit

I remember seeing one on a scout with 40" tires in one of the big magazines they called it tech

fact is its trash!

with great sources of info like POR still running this kinda crap deserves the ridacule it gets.

Ok, z links are trash???? Not any worse than the stock junk, bent alot of those when I was SUA!!!! sure Highsteer is the best option, but till i find some 8 stud flat tops and get time to make a arm, i'm gunna run one. If you think they are dangerous, then head for da ditch when ya see a tan/black,grey sII headed your way!!! I'm not sayin z links are the best setup. That said, they work. Just my .02

I think POR is going to you head DAN.

Hi-steer on a Scout is not easy to pull off and is big dollars. Z-links have been around since the SOA. Done correctly no problem.

I'd like to know what you are basing your opinion on? Experience with a Z-link gone bad? Are you running and an SOA or SUA on your rig?

built my first soa scout 20 years ago ...used a z bar

it broke....re built it stronger

it broke

used really beefy dom tube. tig welded braces on it , got it all dialed in , worked just fine for awhile .

i checked it all the time. then unexpectadly while going down a steep hill . caught the outside of a tire on a rock it broke again.

guess I'm a little harsh on them

but with all the options these days why not do it right?

the same guys that want to scimp on steering will sell everthing to get the right locker?

to me steering is not somewhere scimp or "get by"

I guess the point I'm trying to get at here, what setup are you running? Hi-steer is not that easy to do properly, you have to have the knuckles milled flat, new links built, etc, and clearances are exceptionally tight due the short outer knuckle assembly on the Scout's. Z-link is an acceptable solution, as far as breakage, Josh C had a factory tie-rod shear a Ball Joint off, so where is the real danger, really not related to the Z-link he is running. Besides Hi-steer, and Z-link what other solutions are there for SOA Scouts? What about HEIMS, although not DOT approved, do you frown upon those also?

oh I know aol sucks

but what can you do?

local area has crazy intralata local phone rates

no dsl or other options so aol gets 22.50 a month outa me?

guess isp is my weak link

better then having a zbar as the weak link

aol to the best of my knowledge wont kill you

I have heims in my system...they are way way stronger then any stock ball joint.

and mine are attached to the end of straight dom tube

have not had any problem with them

show me where heims are banned by dot?

yes hy-steer is not as easy as it is on other vehicles

but when its done correctly it has straight links that wont fail when you or a onlookers life may be in the balence
