I’ll soon be ordering an ’06 F-350 dually. I’m trying to decide between a 6.0 PS and a V-10. I’ve owned 2 very good 7.3 PowerStrokes and would like to order a 6.0. But I have read so many bad things about the 6.0 that I’m considering a V-10.
It seems that the only HAPPY owners of 6.0’s are folks that haven’t had them very long, generally less than 30k miles.
Any happy 6.0 PowerStroke owners out there with 60k or 80k miles and minimal problems?
Thanks for any help,
NIB
I have around 70,000km on mine (approx 40,000miles???) and couldn't be happier. I recently put a 6" lift and 37s under it and swapped the diffs out to 4.30. No engine mods yet - in fact the only other mod I've done is remove the muffler.
Towed my trailrig (Samurai w/V6 on 16ft flatdeck) yesterday for the first time since putting on the lift and tires and am very pleased. Still plenty of power and cruises so nicely. Haven';t really had any problems yet except for a couple minor things......turbo hose blew off but was replaced, oild leak repaired. The only thing that frustrates me is the mileage. According to the overhead "liar" my mileage towing yesterday was 9.8mpg.
Still haven't hand calculated yet to know for sure.

I have a buddy with about 80,000 on his 6.0. He loves the thing. His only complaint is that with the mods he has done to the motor he keeps going threw clutches very fast.

I was going to buy one in '03 but heard all the bad stories like you have. I ended up buying a Cummins with a Dodge 3500 wrapped around it. I wish I could've bought the Ford with a Cummins. I can't believe Ford hasn't fixed all the bugs in that 6.0l yet.

visit the 6.0L forums @ www.thedieselgarage.com you'll find plenty of guys there who have high mileage and who have begun modding them quite heavily. The early 6.0's it was a crap shoot if you got a good one, you'll find some guys who love thiers and others who had nothing but problems.
I personally can't say too much about them since I have my 7.3 that I'm quite happy with.

high pressure fuel systems seem to eat the injectors around 150-200k miles otherwise the trucks seem to be pretty good fuel filters were spendy. oh yeah 9 out of the 11 trucks all ate thier automatic's before 150k miles all were hooked to GN's 1/2 the time. a couple had a few t-case problems no different than any other mass produced truck out there seem to be decent platforms they like to spin rpms for thier power not as torqy on the bottom end as the old 7.3's but the mid range and top end is alot snappier

My grandfather just got an '06 King Ranch a couple of months ago. He has right about 2k on the truck and last week a few hundred miles from home had to replace the stock turbo. Ford Techs said it looked to be a bad turbo from the factory.
I don't put too much stock in this storie as you hear them about ever make of truck. There is always a problem here and there with any mass produced vehicle no mater who made it or where it came from. I just like to give gramp crap on how he should have got a Dodge like I did. :D

So far I've got 6100 miles on my 05 'Stroke, with no problems yet...knock on wood. It's all stock, and probably will stay fairly close to that for as long as I have it. I too was very concerned about the 6L's rep before I got this truck.
So far, the only thing I don't like about my 6L is the lack of kick right off idle. It's got some power, don't get me wrong, but it takes a few seconds for it to get to where the boost starts pushing...about 1800 rpm...but when it get's there, you'll know it. Also, it might be a little different between the auto and the manual...mine is a 6-speed.
Towing, no problems so far. I've pulled with it several times now...the last time was gross of just over 19K...no problems.
I know that the first few years did have some issues. I really think that most of the problems are caused by people turning them up...then they want raise a stink about how Ford is junk. Well, IMHO, they are all junk, it's just a matter of what you want to pay for and work on.

Another year for it to show up in the SuperDuties and how long after that to "get the bugs out"? That could easily be 2 or 3 years. I can't wait that long.

As far as the major problems go, from what I gathered from dieselstop.com that 6.0Ls built October 03 or later were suppose to be rather trouble free. My dad has an 6.0L PS with 36k on the ticker so far and the only problem he had was an EGR mess up that was replaced last week under warranty. No other problems. It does suck that the fuel filters are pricey.
I think ford learned there lesson with the 6.0 and wont make the same mistakes with the 6.4

First I've heard about a 6.4. I think I'm just going to put an older Cummins in my '99 F350. I love that truck but it has a V10.
To give you guys an idea how important the diesel is to me, I save approximately $1100 per month driving the '03 Dodge over the Ford. That INCLUDES the $.20 higher price in fuel and the $700 monthly payment. That is at 13k miles per month.
When driving those kind of miles, there isnt time for breakdowns, no matter who pays for it. That (and better mpg) is why I went with the Dodge. I hope Ford comes out with an equal (for my needs) motor because the rest of the truck is better in my opinion.
