I want a D44 for my YJ but don't want to have it full width. I don't know too much about them so what do I need to look for? Any help would be great. TIA

I have Dana 44's front & rear under my YJ.

Mine are from 89 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. They're also available in 86-91 Jeep Grand Wagoneers (front & rear D44 axles).

The width is perfect size for the YJ. The lug pattern is 6 on 5.5.
The front is SUA. The rear is SOA.
Disks in front
Drums in rear

Easy swap.. If you want more info, feel free to ask

Couple picts so you can see the width....

If your looking for a D44 for the rear you could go with a Cherokee 44 their kinda hard to find but they are out there. They are set up for SOA but the perches are off for YJ, but they are the same bolt pattern. This is the route that I took but i do have some regrets. I wish I would have done what Janster did and just went out and got waggy axle or matchin front and rear, because upgrading the front has its limitations now.

Thanks Janster!
Nor Cal Jeep, I already have a 8.8 in the rear. So the reason for the 44 front is so I can get some bigger gears than the 4.88 that are in my 30. Damn 4 bangers jeeps.

oh you didnt say you wanted a 44front. i dont think you will find a 44 front that matches the bolt pattern on the 8.8 unless its from a rubi

Yeah that sucks. Do they make some kind of adapter or something for this?

Sell your 8.8 and buy a matching set.

Keep the 8.8, stronger than a matching 44. Just get wheel adapters or get the axles re drilled to match. You can run a variety of patterns in the front fairly easily.

He could always buy aftermarket 5 on 5.5 axles for the 8.8" and run Ford hardware on the D44 from the knuckles out.

I've got a '82 Waggie front 44 with an 8.8 in the rear. Halfway thru the buildup I decided to ditch the D30 so I had Moser make me some chromoly shafts with 6 on 5.5" bolt pattern to match the D44. They're great people to deal with. As far as gearing goes the 8.8 is your limiting factor. Lowest available gears are 5.13's as far as I know.

I got a set of 88-89 Waggy D44's in the back yard. I had the same concern.

I was either going to get custom outers for the front, and custom rear axles made,
or I was going to get spacer/adapters.

Swap out the spindles with half-ton Chevy Dana 44 spindles. These spindles are often found in the mid '70s Chevy trucks.
Swap out the rotors (with hubs, i.e. the part with the lug studs) and wheel bearings with 1980 Ford F-150 Dana 44 parts.

Now, im goin 60's. :)

Here's mine: '79 F-250 HP narrowed to Waggy width with E-lockers. I did all of the work myself. A lot of work, but well worth it in experience.

If you hadnt found it already there is a lot of D44 information there. Not as much Waggy stuff but its got enough to get you started.

Will this work? I found a Dana 44 and a 9in, I assume they are out of a ford. The guy wants 350 for both. Here is a pic of the 44.
Edit: nevermind, they came out of a late 70's bronco. Side note, I found a set of 44's out of a 86 waggy for $300. Is this a good deale?

late 70's bronco? how late?

if late 70's is 77, then yes it will work

I paid 350 for my HP 44 and Ford 9 from a '77 f-150 and it was an "ok" deal...

I am buidling my HP44 right now, I decided to keep it full width because of the SOA lift that I have. Much more stability. you can put spacers on the back to make up the difference in the with and change to the wheel pattern you need. MR.N's page (keylime......) has a lot of info and links to other sites as well. Google YJ Dana 44 and see all the hits out there, even how to narrow it, if you choose to go that route.
