I need to know wether a rear third member from a '69 FJ40 has the same pinion splines for the yoke as the '74 FJ40? I was told that the drive line yokes were different between the two years?
or basically will the '69 bolt in the '74?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks Mike

Well I know for sure that a 69 third member has the Ten spling pinion in it, and they are.......well to put it blunt.....WEAK AS HELL!!!!
(Ask me why they call me pinion boy ;))
Not sure when the fine splines came into play, but if it was after 74, then it's about the same strength, just don't expect it to stand up to that much abuse. :D:D:D

yes, the '69 pinion yoke will bolt onto the '74 pinion and vice versa..the bolt pattern is differnt i think (my '76 yoke was), but the splines will match up

yep, same splines and I think that early 74's are the same bolt pattern. But if not, no big deal. Be sure to add an anti wrap bar to keep your pinion from wandering around.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

69 has the fine spline inners and the coarse spline pinion. It also has the 3-speed driveshaft bolt pattern.
74 will have the fine spline inners and coarse spline pinion. Flange will have the 4-speed shaft bolt pattern.
Rear shafts interchange, pinions interchange if you address the pattern issue, and both could also be used in a front axle application for those years.
Both are also 4.10 gear ratio.
78 was the first year of the fine spline pinion, and the only year with 4.10 gears AND fine splines. 79 switched to 3.73 ratio gears.

AH.....thanks woody!! I had no idea it was 78. I thought it was earlier than that. :D:D:D
