One of my buddys bought a 1979 J10 for the axles. He got the axles out and another guy got the reat of the truck. Now the guy that has the truck wants to put axle back under it. He went to buy axles from somewhere and found that the spring serches were to far apart on the axles he went to buy. The axles that came off the truck had a spring perch width of about 32.25 inches, one perch on axle tube and the other cast into the dif housing. The springs were hung directly under the frame. Apariently some J10s had the front spring mounted outboard the frame. Somebody told him ALL J10 front springs were outboard. Can anyone shed some light on this for us? As to what trucks he should be looking for to get that 32.25" spring perch width. Thanks.

the older ones have the springs outboard, I think pre-73, but I'm not sure, whenever Jeep went from Kaiser to AMC. I know my 77 has them under the frame, and I just bought a 69 with them outboard. Also try ifsja.com they should be able to tell you the real split date.

Early J series pickups had front 2" leafs, mounted outboard & SOA up to, and including the 1973 model year.

74+ all have 2.5" springs, under the framerails, and SUA.

Waggy's were always 2.5's, under the frame & under the axles.
