Would you drive off this at this angle?

Cliffy [JD]

Depends, am I driving your rig or mine ;)

road1will
03-19-2002, 04:24 PM
hell yeah. id just re-tighten my seatbelt, adjust myself in the seat, tell my passenger to keep all limbs inside the cage, check my fall line, and GO!!!

how scary was it lance?

edit: looking at it more, i would probably straighten the wheels and then go over at an angle. but it depends how many beers i had before that :D

Lance
03-19-2002, 04:26 PM
My passenger is looking at me right about then and saying, "DUDE..... We ARE going to roll if we do this!" :D

gunracer1
03-19-2002, 04:26 PM
sure in your cruiser, but it would be floating the valves before the front tire made it off that ledge. and i bet it would be a 50/50 chace of making it.

MKBruin
03-19-2002, 04:27 PM
hell, I think I would have the balls to take that line....not many people would though.

I don't see a problem with it...you didn't roll did ya?

So what happened next?

Lance
03-19-2002, 04:37 PM
Well I did go for it... I put it in second, and revved it up and sidestepped the clutch. Launched off that fawker! :D

gunracer1
03-19-2002, 04:38 PM
now thats wheeling, i hope you didn't spill your beer.

TODDK
03-19-2002, 04:41 PM
I like the line you picked. I would try it but my ass would be tight as hell. No roll looks like you had a good line and the width was a big factor! I hope I can see it on video...

BTW congrats on kick'n some arse at ARCA

I am too much of a chicken. Maybe I would have done that if I saw someone else pull it off first, and the landing area was flat and safe meaning no possibility of a barrel roll down a canyon. My guess is this is why you were spotting instead of driving at the rcaa event.

Well I was a little iffy because I wasn't sure if the tires would hook up well enough off the clutch dump to launch me to the bottom without rolling. They hooked up juuust fine. :D Another shameless plug for CTM - Notice the wheels are almost at full lock when I did my full throttle clutch dump in 2nd gear. ;)

Looks like a good place for an ARB and cutting brakes. Unlock the rear and brake the rt rear and just pivot it around and down off there straight.

in a standard gravity environment? no.

in an environment w/ minimal gravity and no consequences for abnormal actions? yes.

I would have to agree here. Although I like to SEE the "GUN-IT" approach, I don't like to DO it.

I try to be as much of a finess wheeler as possible.

03-19-2002, 07:19 PM
Well I guess that I am :rainbow: because from looking at that picture I would say no, I wouldn't do it. :( Of course I don't compete so I would probably find a way down with less of a drop off or do a 78 point turn until I was straight. :rasta:

Just bein' honest...

MOGXJ44
03-19-2002, 07:20 PM
Judging by the size of tire at about 3 feet, I'd say that is about a 4-5 foot drop. I'm no stranger to rolling. With all the proper gear and safety stuff taken care of, go for it! BTW, launch in second gear? I gotta see that on film. Especially from the in cab cam. What video will that be on? :smokin:

coyote
03-19-2002, 07:21 PM
Not sure I would punch it but rather lock the rear and plop the front down...did a power line run in Phoenix near the White Tank Mountains and damn near rolled it by trying to turn with the rear brakes locked and the front stearing and pulling it was real easy the second time....might just do the lin lock on both rear's...just need to find a switch that's unused.....

First off, lance don't tell them yet.....:D

Next, sorry guys you'll have to buy the video or for you norcal guys, (silly) you'll have to at least show up for the video preimere party.

Thank you very much

For those of you telling me I should have used cutting brakes, I did. That's how I got at least that lined up. If you'll notice, the front passenger tire is ready to go off the ledge. The back tires began sliding at this point. In fact, in the picture Im shifting the tcase back into 4wd. Sure, I could have backed up and gotten a better line, but that would have costed a point. EVERY point counts! :p

Hell yeah,..Id grab 3rd, run it up to 2000 rpm, dump the clutch and mash the pedal,..... But only if my junk was still running,.....and, I had been invited to participate on the second day.

That was very cool watching you do that, manuever.

Unfortunately, that was one of those courses that Terry, had the advantage of watching you go first, he almost Xeroxed your moves through that course.

I would do it in my rig, but in yours, i would have done exactly what you did. In order to crawl off of something that steep, you need a rig with mainly front flex, yours flexes mainly in the back. If you had dropped that pass. tire, the weight would have gone with it, and endo'd, but if your suspension was opposite what it is now, you could have made it without the heavy launch.

With that said, hell yeah!! i would do that in a stocker!!

Brandon

you fawkin dumped the clutch THERE! That takes some cahones! I'd be chicken or crawl and roll LOL

Dump clutch, damn..

how did you even think to do that? I'd like a pic from further back. It definately looks as if you were not the first to go, how did others do it?

When in doubt...gas it out

My first time at the badlands (it was the first time I wheeled after going coil-over/link) I got spooked and launched off a huge fawk'n ledge in 2nd or 3rd gear, probably 10' of near vertical then a gentle slope for about 30-40'...I made a perfect landing, :) Sweet !
Then I hit a basketball sized rock and put a 4" ding in my front beadlock...fawk

Since then I've launched off some pretty spooky shit.

I'll see what I can get the producer to do about a little film release of Lance's launch.

Thats a fact.
You have to know that if it wasnt a competition, lance could have backed up a few times and crawled right off of it.
But too be there and see how well, Lance ran the number 1 obstacle just before this one, you could see, that he was really turning up the heat, on his own expectations. You also need to remember, that he only had the count, of 1,..........2,..........3,..."Launch", before it would have cost him the same as a back-up. It was very cool! to watch it, play out.

Oh and anyone who thinks they could have crawled down from that angle, with anything but a very light/low rig, and a 200 lb spotter on the end of a rope, doesnt realize how off camber and steep it is....(but a spotter on a rope, would have cost 5 points not gained by the ride along). Nope, the way lance did it, was the only way to do it.

The ,,,,,,'s are there to evoke, a deliberate pause, thus building anticipation. Damn everyones a,,,,,, critic. :flipoff2: ,
Now if I could just add a "," or 2, to my driving style, maybe Id have a rig left at the end of course number 1 on day 1.

I think Lance was also making sure that Kevin was well aware of the pace, that the team needed to maintane, when he strapped him in the passenger seat, and pushed the envelope. In any case, Lance's determination, definitely lit a fire under his already whipped looking spotter, and Kevin, really started to look good as a spotter, after that run.

I am deffinitely getting this event video.
Friday, had lots of action.
Saturday was incredible for carnage, rollovers, and non stop action.
Sunday, the top drivers really showed their experience, and made you well aware, that it is very much a "Driver's Sport".
My mom actualy came out to watch the event on Saturday, and is hooked as a spectator, now.

Lance,

I hope you didn't think that was the scarriest spot on the course for the weekend. Like all Roggy courses, most spots seemed like life or death. The twin rocks on stage 3 for Sunday way the worst. The clock's ticking away, your spotters yelling " don't go, your ganna kill us." Hey, if I get hurt then I get a ride the that 1946 helicopter to the hospital. What's wrong with that ?

In competition with a well set-up rig, I'd probably go for it. On any ordinary weekend, backing up is free. :D

Then again....

I did do something similiar, tho un-intentional on a night run once. After watching several Jeeps in front of me go down this hill and getting rather tippy, I decided to cut into the turn earlier... As I was going down the hill, I found out why everyone else was going wide... fawking 3' to 4' drop off  I was told that both of my back wheels came off the ground (CJ-5's are SHORT!) All I did is give it plenty of skinny pedal until I was down in the wash. Oh, yea, I was also told that my eyes were bigger than my headlights.

Would I do it again? Hell Fawkin' NO! :flipoff2: I wouldn't have done it the first time if I'd seen where I was going. :D

Scott@Rockstomper
06-04-2002, 05:58 PM
In competition... yeah, probably, but I doubt that I would've done it as well as (from hearing everyone describe it) you did. Prolly would have been more like:
drop the right front
wheelstand the truck on the right front
drop the right rear (f'n boggers)
scrape both axles down sideways
bounce on the right side prior to either settling or rolling
keep driving (if the truck is still running and/or upright)

I don't have the gerbilpower to hammer down and drive through--all I can do is crawl.
