Anyone ever weld steel to cast?
I have sticks here that are supposed to do it, but I have a few questions....
The sticks;
red baron 3/32 310 mr (stainless steel electrode) will this stick work?
ok does the heat stay the same?
should I pre heat the cast?
I am welding 3/8 carbon steel to my pig on a dana 60...
Thanks

As far as I know, this has NEVER been done before, and is, infact, IMPOSSIBLE.

:flipoff2: It's just too hard to use the search isn't it??:rolleyes:

This has been covered extensively, preheat a little, stick with a stainless, or missle rod....

A good wire feed will do the trick.

A wire feed? what type of wire did you use? I would like to see some pistures of this. A good picture of a structual weld with a stic would be nice!
I did a search and was alittle unclear, so I thought I would use the expertise of the guys and women on this board. Sorry I inconvinienced you in anyway. :flipoff2: all in fun I appreciate the repiles, and will search those sites listed to insure the proper weld!!!

Buy a temp. crayon at the welding shop , 450 deg. is what you want to preheat to.
I just use the mig also. After welding I wrap fiberglass insulation around the pig and plug the tubes, so the heat stays in for a few hours. Practice on a pos pig if you are worried about the weld.

hey dirtrod, how far out on the housing from the point you're going to be welding at do you need to insure temps of 450 ?
ie ... how much of it do i need to heat up ?

The heat travels thru the cast pretty well. You don't want to just heat the spot you are welding. I use a salamander heater and a rosebud tip on the torch so the whole pig is pretty close to the right temp. The more area you heat the better. imho
