: I need a BF Radiator

I am soon to be dropping a 500 Cad into my Scout. I have a POS Hugh's 4 core that has got to go no matter what. I know some guys have opened up the fender supports to the width of the frame rails and used Cad radiators, but I want more. I have a griffen catalog, and noticed that for Chevy truck aplications the price is the same for a 34 or a 41 inch unit by 2 3/4 thick. approx 20 inches high. 2 ea inch and a quarter thick aluminum cores with a quarter inch air gap in the middle. Being cheaper than wiser if I am going to dump the bucks for the same dough I want the bigger one.
What I am thinking of is slicing back and rewelding the fender supports for the proper width. That will render my body mounts useless, so I am thinking of laying a piece of the thickest wall 1x3 or 1x4 square tubing on its side on top of the frame , reusing my poly body mounts, and slicing an inch out of my body lift to make everying line up correctly. The Chevy radiator by my calculations will still be about a half inch shorter than the Scout one, so clearances should be ok on the top. I would just scab in pieces on the top to widen the supports that span the fender supports.

I am not trying to reinvent the wheel here, so if there is something else easier and proven I am all ears. I have a electric fan now and would later try to rig up one or 2 on this new setup. For my useage day in and out electrics are quieter and I don't need them all that often

Have you ever considered a tilt front clip?

Now would be a great time.. weld the hood to the fenders, which are already bolted to the grille.. hinge it in the front, dump the inner fenders entirely, and build up your custom radiator mount.. LOTS of room then.

I can post some pictures later.. but I have a shop calling my name..

Ah, what's wrong with the rad? I just bought one from Hugh's, whom for the most part has been highly recommended.

Can't do the tilt front, I will at some time be replacing the hood, its a daily driver, I need the inner fenders, and I have heard that they really shake . It would be great though to tilt that thing and be able to get to everything on the engine.

On the Hughes radiator, One of the seems started leaking about 9 months into ownership. It was a shitty looking soldier job to begin with. I have tried every sealant out there to no avail, I run a 7 lb cap and it still leaks when hot. They said it was out of warranty and would reimburse me 35 bucks if I sent them reciept of repair. Warranty was only 6 months. I still have the box that it came in, and I plan on shipping that POS back to them as a healing experience as it has caused me much grief. JC Whitney sells brand new 4 cores cheaper than the Hughes recores with I believe a 2 year warranty.

Consider this, can you even get enough air to flow over the bigger one? You don't want hot water getting back into your system just because you bought a radiator too big for your grill to help cool (does that make sense?):usa:

It all depends on how well you do the job. Mine shakes, but I didn't build it initially, and it REALLY shook before I stiffened it up..

Wow.. knock on wood, but the Hughes radiator has held up 2 or 3 years now with good success. I used to go through a stocker (or a repaired stocker) every couple months before.. finally got tired of $30-$80 repair bills..

Don't know if this will help you but I just recently got my new Griffin rad to cool my Cad 472. Its not in an IH though, sorry. Anyway it is the 1.25 2 core but its only 19x26. It has no shroud, only the stock fan behind it. Anyway it cools my truck awesome. It s getting warm around here and it hasn't faltered yet so if you haven't hacked your rig apart yet you might want to consider a smaller radiator that will fit a little easier. I have about a 30 degree engine temp drop with the aluminum rad versus the old Modine HD 4 core. Hope this helps you.

Rockhog runs a 500" caddy through a used stock CJ V8 radiator with no problems. He said that he tried multiple other BIG radiators and couldnt keep it cool. He tossed in the CJ rad and it runs perfect.

So what I am trying to get at is bigger is not always better.

cant wait to see that caddy scream! the d44 is gonna go pop!

instead of tilt front or cutting the solid front body, I'd simply spend the money once on a custom 2 core aluminum

then fab a good effiecient shroad for it.

then pitch the electric and go big mechanical fan

not like the caddies gonna care about the drag

and the increased air flow will keep it cool
