Well, I sold my last trailer and started building a new one.
Some specs:

wood deck
adjustable 2 5/16 coupler
4x2 boxed tube frame and tounge
Anyways, alot of the pics I toke did not turn out.... but anyways...

I am getting the axles next week, so wont get much done on it until then. Got my axles from www.axisproducts.com. $217 for 3500lb electric brake axle.
Anyways, if you have any questions, just ask...If you want pics of anything just ask.

Looks great. The wrap around tongue is very important, and the 45 degree front corners help add something to it and give it a more custom look. I also like the adjustable coupler. This is a very easy coupler to put on a trailer and adds so much to the trailers abilities. Nice work.

What's the wall thickness on the tubing? And it looks like angle cross-members on 24" centers? What size?
Have you used similar materials before? I'm looking at similar sizes for mine, but I'm unsure of what's too little or overkill.

I went with 3500lb axles mostly because I got a smokin deal on some aluminum wheels and trailer tires.
The main tube is 4x2x1/8" boxed. With the wrap around tounge it is very sturdy. 7000k trailer would be the limit of the 1/8" wall box though.
The cross members are 2.5x2.5x3/16 angle. I used this on my last trailer, worked great. Once you screw the whole deck on, it becomes very rigid.
24" centers work for 7000k trailers. If you start building 10-14k trailers, you need 18" centers.

Looks good. Consider adding a recessed toolbox in the deck near the front before you deck it. Even a low profile truck box sunken into the deck makes it so easy to store/lock straps, jacks, etc.. I'm glad I added one to mine.

Might be hard to answer but I was curious what just the steel weighs. I have a 7K trailer now but want to build a new one. I just don't think I can build it as light. My trailer is a circleD built from 3 by 3/16 c channel with wood deck and 2" angle side rails. My rig only weighs 4K so I was thinking of building a lighter trailer to pull with my 1/2 ton. Looks like you're going to have a nice trailer when you're done.

My trailer which is similar to the one in this thread weighs 1700 LBS. Mine was built and is rated for 12k lbs.

Right now, I have about 700lbs in steel, including ramps. I am guessing it will be in the neighborhood of 1500-1700 when I am done.
sorry for no updates, been working on my cruzah for a trip this weekend. I am getting my axles on monday and should have some more updates next week.

So what do you have left before paint besides the axles? In the pics. it looks like you already have the light holes cut into the tubes, but you still needed to add the safety chains, jack, fenders, and you could run all the light wires in the tubes before paint. Do you already have the suspension? Just trying to pry an update out of you, that's all.:D
brimy311
11-15-2005, 05:39 PM
well...it is mostly just in the way~ lol.
I was hoping to have the axles before working on anything else. That way I can move it in and out of the shop.
Things left to do:
Safety chain rings
dove tail
run wire
solder lights in
built fenders
Paint
install deck
Once I get my axles(next monday) I can get back to work on it. I have everything else sitting in the office ready to install.

I faxed by order in on a monday. Then thursday night at 4:30, I get a call and they are waiting for payment. They never told me they needed it up front(but i do understand, just wish they would have called monday). So I mail a check on thursday, they get the check on friday. I called this last monday, 8 days since my payment to see if they were done....Ross says "we are still waiting on your payment". He went up to the office and found my payment, he was like "oh yah, we did get that....but the axles are not done. Can you give us like 6 days?"
I am trying to blow it off....crap happens. I was a little shocked that they would not get them done faster after they screwed up.

I'm curious. Do they build their own axles, or are these Dexter or Quality brand axles? If they are Dexter or Quality brand axles, why would they need 6 days to ship unless they didn't have them in stock. If they are building their own axles, are they using a common spindle type (Dexter style) or the less common UFP style spindles? Just wondering.

His tongue wraps around the perimeter of the frame right to the spring hangers, essentially creating a double frame from the front xmember to the hangers. This differs from some trailers that have the tongue just stubbed onto the front xmember.

Yeah, then they are ordering their axles as needed, that's why they needed the extra time. If I don't have an axle in stock, it takes 2 to 4 weeks to get one from Dexter or Quality either one. The torsion axles are the worst. They always take 4 to 6 weeks for those.
brimy311

They build there own axles in house using Dexter spindles/hubs/drums. They ask for 5-6 days lead time for building them.

Only problem I had was that my axles arrived 2" wider than they were supposed to be. It wasn't a big deal, just meant that I had to get the bling aluminum Yukon rims :D For the price, I wasn't gonna bitch. Are the axles cambered or flat beams? The reason I ask, is that we build some of our axles out of here, and I was considering building and selling them, it's cheaper than ordering prebuilt. And, do they come with the bearings already packed and the axles assembled, or do they leave that for the end customer?

Thanks for the information. One more important question though. Most axle widths are to long for UPS, so are they shipping them to you via truck freight? If so, which company? Just trying to see if I might be able to get the PBB members the axles a little cheaper. I doubt it, but it is worth looking at.

Mine did come truck freight. I can't recall the name, but i'll see if I can get the info for you. Freight company accidently knocked the hub caps off. Axis sent a replacement set free. If you ship axles, bag the hubs and wrap with duct tape.

What's the purpose of cambered trailer axles? Tire wear?
brimy311
11-18-2005, 08:45 AM
Alot of trailers will have a negative camber when loaded, causing tires to wear poorly.
Trailer Guy

What's the purpose of cambered trailer axles? Tire wear?
You've already answered your question with another question. Well, at least partially answered. Tire wear is one factor when cambering axles. The other is to help resist the bending of the axle. With the camber, the axle goes to flat when loaded. With out the camber, it bows towards the ground, and if overloaded or hitting a large bump in the road, they can bend easily. The camber just helps all of this. I always suggest that any axle with a track width (center tire to center tire) over 72" be cambered.
hybrid-theory: I can't get you axles at a better price in Vermont. Just too much shipping. The only ones I might be able to help are the people on the west coast or western states. Sorry. You could try Redneck Trailer Supplies in Round Lake, NY. They are one of many wholesale companies I deal with. I don't know if they will sell direct to you, but they will at least be able to give you a dealers name closer to you. Their # (518)877-5001. It is at least worth the phone call.

Yeah, no problem. Anytime someone has a question about trailers or parts, just ask. I don't care if you don't buy the stuff from me, I'm just happy to help more than anything. Of course selling stuff is always nice, but I know that I can't compete with wharehouses or the guys with home businesses direct shipping. But with our shop, and experience building, selling, and repairing trailers and truck bodies, we are always willing to help in any way we can.

Wouldnt happen to have any plans you could shoot me the dimensions off of would ya? I'm going to build my own using the unspeakable MH axles, and having dimensions would save alot of research and trial and error. 2 axle, big enough to fit a heep on with dovetail. Curious about tongue length, hitch to forward axle, crap like that. I understand if you dont want to post plans, most places I found in the search just want to sell ya a set.

nope, I checked this before mounting the jack. I can put the tailgate down even if the trailer is not straight on with the truck. It is mostly because the adjustable coupler is about 8" long. The handle also flips upside down on the jack too.

Trailer looks awesome, only thing I can pick out that might be an issue is that jack. Those center post jacks always seem to get dragged off, even with the wheel removed. The one that came with my trailer lasted exactly 3 rus before it was too bent and mangled to use. Luckily I knew it was an issue and had already purchased its replacement. I really like the ring mount style jacks with the big flat pad on the bottom. To swivel or remove you just pull the pin out and swing, and the big pad makes it great for use in camp on soft ground.

GREAT looking trailer. Very clean work!
How far is the front spring mounts from the front of the trailer deck (I guessed on the axle placement on the last utliity trailer I built and it didnt pull too well),
also how far does your tongue stick out from the deck.
Been thinkin on building myself one. I think yours will be the one to emulate.

Not trying to hyjack just showing what I did so it wil never drag or be in the way... I learned the hard way with older trailer that a jack at the front will cause me problems

Brimy's Trailer looks great, anyone have any plans or measurements for a trailer in that size range that they are willing to share or sell cheap. I bought the jack with my axles, the website had no pics. I was not real thrilled when I got it, but it was only $17 lol.

How far is the front spring mounts from the front of the trailer deck (I guessed on the axle placement on the last utliity trailer I built and it didnt pull too well),
I have set my last two just like this. I don't include the dove tail in the length of the overall deck
http://www.championtrailers.com/utility/pop-up_images/UTILITY3.jpg
also how far does your tongue stick out from the deck.
This varies from trailer to trailer. Most manufactured trailers I have seen have been around 39-40". I went with 46" on mine. I like having a longer tongue. Turns nice, can put storage on the tounge, and I think that it pulls better IMO.

I went 65/35 on my trailer. Its 128" from the front xmember to the center of the equalizer hanger, with a 16'4" deck. This is 10" further back than 60/40. I like this a lot better than the last one we built at 60/40. I never really have to worry about load placement...I always have good tongue weight.

The trailer I bought a few months back has the axles mounted significantly farther back than the usual car hauler. I've found that because of this you can load a front engine rig onto it farther back than normal and have a bunch of storage on the front of the deck that doesn't get in the way of loading and unloading the rig. Also on the highway it disappears. Easily the nicest most stable easy to tow car trailer I've ever towed.

I am waiting on my snap on butane soldering iron to come in, then I can get the wire done. Once that is done, I can put a deck on it and use it. Hopefully I will have this thing done soon!

Kinda dumb question......what did you use for the stake pockets? I need to add some to my trailer and am looking for the easiest way to fab them up.
