I am looking to find out the front and rear gear ratio to my truck... The front is the original axle of an '82 1/2 ton diesel and the rear is a 12 bolt out of a full size blazer (I think it's an early 80's model)... I have a code off of the back axle that reads "KAJ W196 2 F"... Can anyone tell me what ratio I have or what other information that I need to get to determine that??... The glove box does not have the sticker that would contain the codes... Thank very much!!!

Pull the diff cover and look at the numbers stamped into the ring gear. That will tell you the number of teeth on the pinion and ring gear. divide them and you will get your ratio.
Just guessing your gear ratio is probably 3.08's or so (judging from year and application given), but I don't have the axle in front of me.

also look for a ratio tag a little metal tag held on by a diff cover bolt, it will say r/p count and ratio. also look at the front it may have one there also.

ok guys, I counted the teeth in the ring and the front and back are different ... I believe that means that the ratios are different.. there were 34 teeth in the rear and 41 teeth in the front... The rear axle is out of another vehicle and the front to that vehicle should still be available... I might just trade fronts .... That would solve my gear ratio problems because then I would have matching gears from under the same truck .....
Thanks for the help !!!!

sounds like 4.10s in the rear and 3.53/ 3.08 in the front

jut look on the outer edge of the ring gear..
the tooth counts of the ring and thepinion are stamped into the gear,,
cant miss them
you probably just miscounted
there wouldnt be a tag on a cover bolt unless it was a posi, and even then not all of them got a tag
i now of several gm trucks with gov lok and such and no tag on the diffs, older and later both,
dana was good about tagging all their posi axles though, and ford well they tagged practically everything
and in the 80s chevy 1/2 tons the 2.73 ratio is the most common by faaaar
especially with the 305 and auto trannies
which is a horrible ratio for anything besides highway mileage
but everyone was all about gas mileage then, and well are again nowadays
and in a heavy vehicle that doesnt get the best gas mileage anyways
ironic,
such as life is, in alot of ways
good luck
