: Dana 44 - what side have you broke the most?

Which Dana 44 shaft have you broke the most, long or short?

I've got a few full width axle shafts that I will be having cut down to EB width. I'm just curious as to what side seems to break the most. Short side or long side. I know the theory, but I want some real world stats.

I'm guessing it's just about even. I know I can use the short side axles from full width ford and cheby, so I'll probably have 3 long sides made.

C'mon, I know there's more axle snappers out there! Vote!:nuke:

About a 5:1 ratio on the short side breaking first!

I welded my Long side and just stock short sides now (unwelded)

Thanks for the input everyone. Looks like Lance's ratio is about right.

I think I'm going to have 3 long sides cut, since they will be hardest to track down for a fair price. And they'll have a larger u-joint than stock EB.

Then if day comes that I can afford a warn shaft, the short side will be the first upgraded.

If your doing one side at a time, i wouid get a warn Long side, the Short sides easyier to find, and smaller to pack

my thought is the long side has the length to allow some flex (twist) and thus will go a little farther before it reaches its limit and breaks. the short side reachs its limit real quick.

I say go with the long side warn, the long side shafts are the most expense to replace when you break them, with the Warn long side the ratio will be more like 10 to 1. plus as mentioned before the short ones are easier to store.:emb:

Are we talking about U joints letting go, or actualy snapping the shafts?
U joint Failures: About 3:1 (short side:long side).
On 3 occasions, the short side took the long side with it, when the load transfered, through the locked ARB.

Shaft Failures: 3 long sides, 1 short side

Since Ive been running the CTM joints and Warn shafts, the weak link has been the Warn Locking Hubs. Current Talley: 2 long side, 1 short side.

Well I guess I'm kinda talking about both. I realize a broken u-joint takes out the shaft a lot.

Dutchman cuts down axles for $85 a pair, so I'm trying to figure out which side I should have made. I got a line on a cheby 44 for $20 so I'll have a short side spare soon and 3 long axles to be cut. So I still think I'm going to have long side spares made, but it's kind of a tough decision. As of now I'm not breaking stuff, but I'm driving pretty mellow until I can stock pile some spare junk. Plus I'll be stepping up to a 36 on the next set of tires. I've swapped out my entire drive train in the last year, so it's taking me some time to build up my spare parts again.

I've heard the stock ford hubs are stronger than the warns.....Is this true?

I have only broken my short side. Once because of a u joint and once cuz i hit a rock a little to hard . lol
I have broken the ford front hub twice (they were used from pick and pull)
I havent broken my warn hubs yet.
