: Dana44 6 lug to 5 lug conversion?
Bridog 03-19-2002, 07:41 PM I have a shortened dana44 from a 1/2ton chevy w/6 lug pattern in my Jeep. Does anyone know what the easiest, lowest cost way to convert it to 5 lug jeep pattern? Could I simply change to ford hubs and rotors, or do I need to go back to the knuckle? Also, are the axle stubs interchangable between ford and chevy?
Thanks, I'm just getting back to the jeep after a 19 year rest, Brian.
near Seattle.
Bridog 03-19-2002, 08:41 PM Or is there a rim available with both 6 and 5 lug for a spair? Hokey but it would be OK.
JIM3030 03-19-2002, 08:50 PM I tried to get a local rim biulder to make me a spare like that . they wouldn't. I think the best is to have a machine shop plug then redrill your chevy hubs you can do the rotors. I had both hubs and rotors done for $100.00 then you get to keep the big bearings. if you go with ford stuff you will need a smaller spindle. I think dutchman axle will do it for you also but you need to ship

How about a clue as to what to search for since you seem to know where this info resides.
Thanks, Bri.

Well, I typed in LUG CONVERSION and came up with 50 threads on coverting the lug pattern on axles. If you wanted to get more descript you could probably type in dana 44 lug conversion
Just in case that was too much, here:

Bridog 03-22-2002, 05:51 PM OK, Thanks for the help. I searched for dana lug conversion earlier today but didn't come up with what I need. I found some stuff on 6 to 8 but no 6 to 5.

Look for TOTW The 44 front end was a topic of the week a few weeks ago. Probably one of the best discussions we've ever had as far as depth and breadth of knowledge/experience.

:D ;)
Bridog 03-23-2002, 04:18 PM Hello again:
Well I finaly found the topic of the week that you refferenced, seems like a lot of talk about d 60's. I did find a link that the poster stated was the spot to find out just what I need, I think it's the second posting. anyhow the link doesn't work for me, it's http://www.jeepgod.net/d44625.html Is there a better site for this info?
Thanks, Bri.
mtndewmaniac 03-24-2002, 01:16 PM I have assisted mechanics (and done a couple myself) with knuckle conversions quite a few times in the past, before I even found this pirate site. Now that I know what's on here, I can virtually find anything I need to know, but sometimes there is a little something that needs addressed that I cannot seem to get a search going. But anyway, typing a few variations into the search will net you many answers to choose from.
love this forum :flipoff2:
but there's some interchangability issues that don't seem to want to surface on some searches. but they're probably ridiculous.
I'll probably get flamed for this, so let me start it off :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Unfortunately, Jeepgod's site will probably be down for about six months, he's on deployment to the Med:D:D
Bridog 03-24-2002, 06:38 PM Hi mtndewmaniac , Well if you have good info don't hesitate to pass it on. I wouldn't worry about getting flamed, it's only the retards advertising what A holes they are. The good folks will help each other out.
Thanks, Bri.
Bridog 03-31-2002, 05:56 PM Hello mtndewmaniac:
Some of the guys over on the Wanted area say that the Ford 150 hubs and discs will slip right onto the GM spindle. Does that sound like the conversions that you helped with? Do you have the dimensions for the ford and gm spindles that you could post or email?
Thanks, Bri.
mtndewmaniac 03-31-2002, 06:20 PM Sorry Bri, no pics to show. I have also heard about the spindle compatability, shoot I use to sell the same part # bearings to both makes. The techs I assisted, well their customers were the ones deciding to use the whole sheband, customer preference I guess, even though oftentimes the brake calipers were the same make, (bendix) they would always want it done the harder way. Hell they were even paying more for what they wanted, I'm not going to argue with them on how to spend their money. :flipoff2: :D
But personally, any way that a conversion can be done is great, and if there are more options, then even better. :D As soon as I'm financially equiped, I'll start on the pathway to bigger mods. (and a garage would help too).:smokin:
Bridog 03-31-2002, 09:05 PM Yeah, seems like there is never enough money or space. I have mine stuffed in an ancient single car garage so it's tough to work on the jeep. I'm sorta toying with the Idea of dropping in a 454 into it. I have a rust bucket Suburban but it has a sweet 454 in great shape in it, just waiting to be pulled. I just don't know if the old transfer case is up to that kind of power. Oh well that's a project for L8R.
I can't believe this post is still a question.
Here's the recipe. You need '76or older Chevy Dana 44 spindles, calipers, and backing plates. Fullsize Jeep '74-76 Dana 44 spindles, calipers and backing plates are exactly the same as the mentioned Chevy parts and could be used in place of or mixed with Chevy stuff. Get Ford '76-92 wheel bearing hubs and rotors. The Ford wheel bearings are the right diameter to use with the Chevy/Jeep spindles. For lockouts buy your choice of brand to fit any Chevy/Ford/Jeep Dana 44. They're all the same.
This post which I found in about two minutes by searching on the words "five lug" lists this recipe:

Bridog 04-01-2002, 06:09 PM cmegoup , thanks for the link to that thread, Some good info there, and that link to the bearing site will be a lot of help in the future too.
Thanks, Bri.
