Rerock

I got a '86 K10 with a 350 and a Q-jet 4bbl with electric choke that I just bought. Not overly fmiliar with Chevy's, or carbs for that matter, so I'm curious.
The housing on the electric choke on the side of the carb is cracked, and the guy just duct taped the housing together. The choke right now is staying on all the time regardless of engine temp. Now since the housing is all taped together, I'm going to start by buying a new carb. Prolly an Edelbrock 1406.
Once I get the new carb on, if the choke still doesn't work, I'll check the vaccum lines to make sure they are hooked up properly and working. I would also like to know where the other end of the green wire connecting to the electric choke module on the carb goes. I read in a search that the choke is supposed to receive a constant 12V, but where does it get the 12V from? I would think that chokes get their signal from the coolant temp sensor so it knows when to "turn off"?
Insight would be helpful. I'd rather know what to do before I start rather than when I'm in the middle of it. Thanks.
Edit: I posted this in newbie because I think this is a stupid question that any guy with a Chevy should know.
