when did ford swich to 31 spline. which vehicles have 31 spline and 4:11 gears. what flang to flang axle widths are avalible.I want a rear end that is in the 62 to 65" width and has 31 spline and 4:11s. disc would be cool too but the disc rear ends are 28 spline right? has anyone redrilled the axle flanges to 6 lug? if so how hard is it. or if you had it done what did it cost? Im new to the 9" stuff but would like to run one in my buggy if i can find one for reasonable. thanks for any info you can share with me.

I believe they went to 31 splines in EB's '76? Someone will yell and correct me if I'm wrong :flipoff2: . I believe trucks went to 31spline earlier, not sure of year though.. 74/75 likely.. and are wider flange to flange. I believe the one in my Bronco measure's 57" flange to flange.. again, not positive.. been a while since I went and measured.
You can put 35 spline (and I think 40) axles in there from aftermarket folks.. combine it with a spool, and a FF kit, and you have one stout axle.

31 splines did not come in 66-77 broncos. The 78's were the first to get them. Earlier F150's had 31 splines, not sure how early but I pulled 31 splines from a '77 once. The f150's and 78+ broncos should be 65" WMS to WMS. The EB's are 58" WMS to WMS. I have also heard that the 4WD rears are wider (65") than 2WD rears. Not sure about any of the mustang or lincoln stuff.

just parted out an 79 F150 2WD and it had 28 spline axles
so check them out you never know with ford:D

so did any of the F150s come come with 4:11 gears. would it have to be a truck with a tow package?

I'll let you know tomorrow. I picked up a banjo 9" yesterday. It came out of a F100, don't know what year. I'll post the spline count, gear ratio, posi (if it has it) and what it costs to redrill it to six lug. I'm converting mine to disc brakes, don't ask me what it costs, I got all of my parts form the shop :D . It is 65" WMS to WMS
