I have a 1996 GMC C2500 4X2 XC, 6.5 TD, NV4500.

The truck will die randomly and not start up again for a minute or more. It acts like it has no fuel. It tries to start up, but doesn't run (sec only).

I put it on the code reader at work and got the following codes:

Set DTCs (codes):

History DTC P0251
Injection Pump Metering Control A
MIL REQUESTED SINCE IGN NOT RUN SINCE CLEAR P/F

HISTORY DTC P1216
FUEL SOLENOID RESPONSE TIME TOO SHORT
MIL NOT REQUESTED SINCE IGN NOT RUN SINCE CLEAR P/F

HISTORY DTC P1217
FUEL SOLENOID RESPONSE TIME TOO LONG
MIL NOT REQUESTED SINCE IGN NOT RUN SINCE CLEAR P/F

I have had people tell me that it could be one or more of the following:
FSD cooler (?)
PMD (?)
FCS (fuel shut off solonoid)
Injection pump ($$$)

If anyone knows anything, please let me know. I do not know much about this engine. I am a college student, so I don't have much money. If anyone knows any tricks or "Short Cuts" please let me know!

Thanks
Eric

seems to usually be a pmd or the wiring harness to it.
heres the harness. http://www.ssdieselsupply.com/product_102_PMD_Harness.html
also, checkout gm diesel website.

can't be sure without checking alot of things but most i've worked on with that problem is the transfer pump goes takes out the injection pump and i belive like said above there is a common wiring problem

If it is the injector pump, there is a hidden warranty on it if you are 11 years or 120k miles. You have to call the GM 800 number. I had a injector pump replaced free of charge on a '98 I had.

Damn. I have 165K miles.

Thanks for the info. I am not sure what route I will take yet.

PMD usually doesn't trip codes....it just dies.

I suspect bad grounds, especially between the cab and engine.
Check all connectors for corrosion, then suspect the pump..

you have pump death codes...sorry. Remove the fuel filter and check the bottom of the filter bowl for metal fillings with a magnet. If you find metal, the pump is f***ed. If the filter bowl is clean, you can just replace the pump
without dropping the fuel tank and cleaning all the steel out and replacing the lift pump. Look for a used pump or a reman, but at least around here they still run950-1200$. If you ONLY had a p1216, it could just be the pmd, but with the p0251...it virtually gaurantees a failed pump. I rechecked the special policy and the pump is only covered for 11 years/120k.
