OK,
My friend who drives a 77 FJ40 is ragging on me since I got my Trooper... "It's going to break every trip out, It's a Trooper" blah blah blah...:shaking:
I know he is just messing w/ me, but I was wondering how well do they hold up with easy to med wheeling against the yota's and jeeps?
There is a pretty big group meeting right after thanksgiving, and I will not likely take mine out yet, just because I haven't even driven it yet w/ the mud tires I just put on, and it will be mostly stock by then still
I have a 86 trooper that I bought for 300 bux. Has 70k original miles on it but got it cheap cause some punk kids broke all the windows save for the windshield. Chopped the top and have been beating the absolute ever lovin shit out of it for the past three yrs. Only mods are cutting the fenders for some baby swamps. Mine is the 5spd with auto hubs which I swapped for manuals. Breakage= 0 I think the trooper is about one of the toughest rigs you can run stock..... Mine has been rolled twice, put on it's side numerous times and driven like its been rented. I think you will be fine, just don't exspect too much from the front end an you will be fine

mine is stock except for warn hubs. i've driven the piss out of it on and off road over the past ~2-3 years with no major issues. i put a hole in the #4 piston about a year ago, but what do you expect from a 200k motor...

Had an 89 (4 cyl, 5 speed manual) and put 215K on it before some charity drove it (not towed it) away. Light to medium offroad, most to hunting/fishing grounds.
Put manual hubs on if it doesn't have them. The auto hubs :barf:
Cracked head as a potential problem has already been mentioned tho mine didn't.
It had a pretty good stock clutch.
Was constantly replacing exhaust system, but I also drove a lot thru standing salt water.
Windshield. It's flat and crazes like hell if you get a crack or star. I went thru 4.
It got me everywhere I wanted to go and always got me back for 10 years.
Sorry. I meant to post this for the guy in the other thread who just bought an 89

beat the tar outta my 89 Trooper for 2 years with a 3" body lift with 33s... I ran it with the auto hubs & the snap rings that retain the axle in the hub are the only thing that just popped off... I never broke anything other than what wore out because i've got 240,000 miles on the damn thing. shifted the 2.8L at 5 grand evertime i drove the thing and it still runs mint haha. As far as I'm concerned Troopers are pretty indestructable.

In 2.5 years of heavy off-road use, (literally every trail in the Wells guidebook for AZ other than President's Choice and Vampire Mine) as well as extensive California and Utah wheeling... have broken *nothing* off road.
The truck was totalled when my ex GF slammed it into a parked semi trailer at 70mph.
We drove it home, and I still drive it today. Durability is not a question.
