If you really needed a reason why it is important to stay on the designated trail, here is one for you. This came from a Sierra Club mailing list.

Calling all defenders of the wild, dessert rats and tree hugger alike, I need YOUR accounts of ORV abuse on Forest Service and BLM Lands

I am creating a color booklet to show Congress why we need more money set aside in the federal budget to keep off road vehicles out of the Wilderness and away from our special places. I know you might say Congress doesn't care. But after I show them your incredible pictures of wrecked landscapes and tracks into Wilderness areas, they will. To create this fantastic new lobbying tool I need....

1. Really good pictures of damage caused by ATVs, dirtbikes, snowmobiles, dune buggies, 4-wheelers on Forest Service or BLM lands. A good picture would have clearly identifiable tracks in it, and the area would look like a mess. Tracks around gates, next to signs indicating that the area is closed, or into Wilderness Areas with a sign showing that the area is Wilderness would also be great. Clear color prints or slides are preferable.

2. The estimated amount that it would cost to repair the damage portrayed in the picture if the agency ever had enough money. Call your district ranger and ask them. You'd be surprised how willing they may be to give you an estimate, and that's all we need.

Please send it to me

I was thinking the same thing. It's not too hard to steal a forrest service sign, then put it up near Jim Bob's trash pile on the back of his private property. Snap a few photo's, say Ranger John estimates $100,000 for the clean-up, we look like a$$holes.

I would hope that congress could see through something like this and realize it comes from a jaded viewpoint.

Brings to mind a few incidents with biologists taking hair samples from captive fox and stuffed grizzlies here in the Northwest. Let's see defrauding the government and how many people went to jail or even lost their jobs?! NONE!!:mad3: Seems like someone is asleep at the wheel   I hate politicians. One day I am gonna have to suck it up and run for office. Until then I am going to keep voting and bugging all of my representatives, as we all should.

DAMN this is dumb... "the place will look like a mess" ??

who's to say that all hte pics we take of tracks are solid evidence that the tracks were from the Sierra Club, making illegal tracks on purpose to Fraud the government out of money???

Fawk them! This isn't the government's job anyway. How do you feel about YOUR tax money being spent in the federal budget to keep YOU out of national parks? :mad3:

I've said it before and I'll say it again, vote Libertarian (http://www.libertarian.org). This shouldn't even be an issue.

I was just arguing this point to the girlfriend recently... All it takes is a treehugger with an attitude to take his rig and a couple of bags full of garbage to the forrest, make some tracks, dump the trash, snap a pic. But what can we do? Nothing but clean it up. They are going after us, we have nothing to go after them for. That's why we all need to stay together as a wheeling community and take care of what we have left. Won't be long before they have it all.....

this reminds me of a few years back, tree huggers were trying to stop logging in bc, they set up a huge camp and blocked the road in the name of the environment, I have seen the pics from when they left and the area was a mess, garbage everywhere ect.
watch the tree huggers and get pics if you see em doing anything bad, this does work both ways you know.

heh, send them pics of equestrians and hikers doing damage and shitting alongside the trail. Seriously, I think everyone has a responsibility to conserve the environment, but these groups have taken it a bit too far. I mean, there's no good reason why we shouldn't ALL be able to get together and clean up trails. Hell, with wheelers its easier to get it out, as you have a vehicle to haul instead of just feet. *sigh* but what a pipe dream it is...... Up here in New England, we have to keep all our damn trails secret.

Yup. Seems to be the only way not to get busted. Just last weeked I bought some friends from school out wheelin. They got me and everyone else kicked out. ( they rutted up guys field who owns the base of the mtn, even let me borrow a tractor when my 304 gave out up there last year) The guy never minded till his shit got fucked with, then he called the cops, and now no one can wheel there. Be careful who u bring on your trails!!!! To keep shit open, we gotta regulate ourselves, let's not give these bastards any help!!!!!! If you see people fucking shit up, git after em for it, it may sound :rainbow: but it is best thing u can do.
