I searched for 5.2 and AX15 as well as 318 and AX15 and couldn't find anything.
I know I'm not the first person to think about this. What would it take to mount the 5.2 to the AX15? Should this even be considered? Ideas? The 5.2 is free, with computer. I already have the AX15 connected to a tired 4.2L...
any help?

I'm not sure if it will work or not. I do know that the AX-15 has been known to blow up behind the 4.7 I6 stroker. I would suggest upgrading to a stonger transmission especially if you are going to be doing any 4 wheeling. An NV4500 should do the trick.

if you don't have the engine yet, i would look for one with the tranny already on it. man does it make life simpler, cheaper, and just plain happier. that way you get something that is bolt on, strong enough, and already there.

In some searching I've done, I found that the Dodge NV4500 will bolt up to a D300 (Jeep version) - meaning it should also bolt up to the 231 (would probably need a special seal). Not sure I'd trust the 231 behind a V-8 and NV4500 tho.

It is a direct bolt if you use a 3.9l Dakota's bell-housing. This bell-housing uses the external slave cylinder that is found on '95 up XJ's and Wranglers. The nice part of this swap is upgrading to a NV-4500 in the future. It uses the same slave and throwout bearing as the NV-4500. The hard part is finding a 5.2 flywheel. I think they only came in Ram trucks, the going rate for one around here is about $150.
If you wire in a 5.2 with fuel injecton, get the harness and pcm from a '95 and earlier Ram or ZJ. This system is like the 4.0's, but with 2 more cylinders. The crank angle sensor is easier because it bolts directly to the block, with only a cutout for clearance, Very easy!
If you go to junk yards looking for a bell-housing, keep in mind that some early 3.9l Dakota's had an NV-4500 option, so you might be able to score for real cheap!

Why would you want to use a 3500?
