I thought this post would be of assistance to many planning on this conversion.......
'96 Vortec 4.3L, 700R tranny, keeping NP231, going in a "95 Wrangler.
I have rec'd my harness from Centech, in addition I have rec'd my adapter from AA. My concern is the VSS and getting a signal back to the PCM (computer) on the new motor. I have called Centech, they tell me since I have no output on the rear of my tranny, they don't have a reluctor ring set-up for me. They tell me to call AA. AA tells me to call Howell, Howell tells me to call someone else......
Jim at Howell did mentioned a "buffer-box" set-up that would convert my Chrysler Signal to a GM signal?
Anybody got any Ideas on how to get the correct signal back to my new computer?

I don't have a clue what GM uses, but Chrysler uses a 4,000 pulses per mile square wave. If that helps.

GM uses 40 tooth Pulse type late model Vortec and LT1 LS1 L35 L98
U will need to adapt one using a after market type clamp on reluctor ring setup Contact these guys his name is Zack
Speedscene wiring they will Not BS you and they know what they are Talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what does not running one do? i am just curious because i have heard people who do run them and those who don't. i have a 99 vortec 350 with a 97 vcm and i currently am not running one and it runs fine. i don't do any road driving so if there is an ill effect there i would not know.

the buffer changes the sig from AC to DC same pulse so the computer can understand whats going on
the buffer proper name ( DRAC module ) will not change the pulse from the Vss

if you had one your motor would run better
it could properly tell the motor whats going on !!
but if trail rig only i would not worry about it

Thanks guys. I did try and call speed scene. Didn't call me back. I actually got my lock-up kit from them.
As far at the reluctor ring set-up. Where would I put it? In the t/c? My understanding on putting it on the tranny output shaft wouldn't work becuase the govenor gears; not enough room to put it on the adapter.
I ended up getting a "Buffer Box" from Merlin Tech. It will convert my Chrysler signal to a Chevy signal, in addition, the box has a resistor that will allow me to use stock guage. Overall, saved money by just buying the box.

For my TPI motor in my Jeep, I got a VSS unit from Painless Wiring. I put a mechanical speedo device thingy whatever you call it in my Atlas and ran it to my autometer mechanical guage. The Painless VSS module goes inline with the mechanical speedo cable, pretty trick. I put it on the back of the speedometer and plug the speedo cable directly into that.

Yes, pretty trick. I'll have to remember that for anyone who asks that is going with a cable speedo. How much does painless charge for that?
