Allright I went out to run to the store and I now have a check engine light. All gauges are reading normal and the truck runs fine. Is there a way to read the codes without taking it to a shop.

from what I can read (only a few letters and a couple numbers) you have to have a scan tool Vatozone, checker,KC'sredneckautopartsandfriedchick en, what ever store you guys have in the great state of Tejaus might do you for free...

How do you check the codes, its just a steady check engine light. My question is how to pull the codes.

Sorry, been busy. Well I went to Vatozone and they said it was either a module or a misfire code. He said his little reader was confused? So he reset the code and said to drive it, if it popped back on we/he would investigate it further. Well have been driving it and no light so I guess it was a hicup in the system.
Robert
a injector could have taken a dump if its throwing a misfire code. vatozones scanner sucks anyway. Might want to go over to thedieselstop.com and ask them.

How many miles do it have on it?

Without the proper code diagnosis I am only guessing here, but it is an educated guess. If it really is a misfire code then the first place I would look is at the injector harness. Both inside and outside of the valve cover. They have been known to fry a connector or wire and develop a intermittent misfire. Also check the outside inj. harness for chafing. The valve cover gasket is reusable so no need to buy a new one unless the harness plug is burnt.

Along the lines of what FF3PM said.. Typically the glowplug wires are what fries so you'll end up with a truck that's difficult to start in the morning & when you do you get an abundance of white smoke.

Hell, its been like that for two years. Maybe there is a problem.

200,000. The only thing ever been done to it is a/c comp and a waterpump.
Even has origanal batteries.:D

it should start rather easily if you wait for the WTS light to go out.
Possibile failure points UVC (under valve cover) wiring harness
Glow plugs
Glow Plug Relay (GPR)
Valve cover gaskets (electrical connectors held within)
VCG connectors on engine harness
All pieces are relatively inexpensive individually
GPR diagnosis - Key on w/ wts illuminated measure voltage on each of the 2 large lugs you should have no more than a 0.3V difference if greater replace Your options are below ask for it by part number @ parts house they have tried to give me a starter relay which looks about the same but will die very quickly
# (Allied Electronics) 576-1078 (Stancor Heavy Duty 586-902)
# (Autozone) MR99
# (Ford) F7TZ-12B533-CA (94-96 with pigtail)
# (Ford) F81Z-12B533-AC (96-early 2000 w/o pigtail)
# (International) 1807230C2
# (International) 1826634C94
# (Napa) GPR-109
Glow plug diagnosis - 4 electical connectors, 2 in each valve cover gasket the outermost pins are for the glow plug check resistance to ground. under 1 ohm is ok, 1 to 2 ohms is questionable, and over 2 ohms needs replacement. I would personally replace everything over 1-2 ohms if I was being cheap, or replace them ALL if any one of them were over say 2 ohms.
VC gasket diagnosis - since you have the connectors disconnected for testing the GP's resistance if there's oil in the connector it generally means it's fried, it got too hot and melted some of the plastic around the pin.
UVC harness - remove valve cover time consuming use 1/4" drive w/ swivel for rear bolts some nead swivel socket not a socket w/ swivel attached depending on how close the cab is to the engine. Physically look @ the harness sometimes you will see cooked insulation, or fried connectors. Check very closely on the ones where you saw bad GP's. Problems should be fairly obvious here. While you're in there double check the reistance of the gp's same specs should apply if different than what was measured through valve cover gasket you have problem w/ valve cover or UVC harness if the same then replace glow plug.
DO NOT USE AUTOLITE GLOWPLUGS use Motorcraft or BERU plugs Autozoo is the cheapest and they sell them tell them you want part number ZD-10 or ZD-11. their computer has been known to pull up some off the wall stuff.
Glow plug that's difficut to pull out use either kroil, pb blaster or seafoam to help dissolve carbon buildup. Running the engine hard had heavy shortly before removing these helps burn it off as well. A section of 1/4" fuel line helps to remove & install the new ones once they are loose enough to turn by hand.
part number list (http://superdutydiesel.com/wiki/index.php?PSD%20Part%20Numbers) Here's a list of part numbers should you need to replace anything. If you need the UVC harness or the Valve cover gaskets find the closest international dealer (local parts stores don't carry the stuff) or order from www.powerstrokeshop.com. Part numbers are vital @ the international place it's the same thing as they put in their trucks but some stores have been know to say that ford changed things so their parts won't work if they have to look them up.
