What years are you looking at? I have heard a lot of bad about the newer ones...

That is why I am asking.

I am looking for a Ford to turn into a crawler and I want to know which one to get.

Thanks.

stock will most likely be a mazda. its allright, for a midsize truck. there's not much for options though. you take what you can get.

it will be a M5OD tran. there biggest trouble I see is the shift rail plugs that are rubber leak out all the fluid and take out the trans! I would suggest changing these to metal plugs but not sure where to suggest to get them from.:)

They're pretty good as far as strength goes. A big V8 probably would do it in, but it handles the 4.0 fine. The ones behind the SOHC 4.0 has had some problems, though (Its a different tranny than ones with OHV 4.0s).

True, theres not a bunch of crawler options for the BW1354 T-case that goes with it, but theres a few that built double T-case setups already, and the AtlasII will fit. (KluneV was going to release a kit for it but they're lagging).

'93,'94 are the best years.

I'm thinking of putting something like this (http://www.therangerstation.com/dualtcase.htm) in front of an AtlasII on mine for some killer gearing options.

Ford sells the rubber ones for $20/set. Technically, the plugs are designed to be vents as well -- venting gas pressure, but keeping fluid in and water out. Unfortunately, they wear out in 7-8 years, and many folks don't pay attention to the fluid under the truck until the tranny goes bang.

And if your M5OD is anything like mine, the shifter seal and ball socket is completely worn out, so there's no reason for the rear plugs to have to vent pressure anyway.
