: *again* insuring the trailer???
B-rock 11-15-2005, 07:13 PM Just called my farmers insurance agent about insuring my trailer. 16' gator. She asked what the trailer GVW rating is. I said 7,000 lbs. just what's stamped on the trailer. After looking it up she told me that's over the weight limit of a standard policty. (2,000Lb limit is the standard umbrella coverage) And I would need to change it over to a comercial policy, thats about another 400 bucks a year just for the truck. Now am i just wrong here or does that seem crazy??? what is everybody else doing? I told her that it's only for towing my jeep, that's also covered under farmers. what the hell???
4Runnerdude 11-15-2005, 07:39 PM I have my 20 foot car hauler insured with them for $40 a year, they wrote it up as a rider( or something like that) with my suburban. Something is definately wrong. I thought trailers were supposed to e cheaper to insure than motorhomes, I will only be paying $550 a year for insurance on my MH, but they are going through some other company I think. Your agent should be doing a better job of working as a broker, if this is the best he could do I would go elseware, you can probably even stay with farmers, just get a better agent.
willyswanter 11-15-2005, 07:42 PM My 14k gooseneck is insurted through AAA for $75 a year... They didn't ask any questions, just showed them the registration and they copied everything down and took my $75.
4Mogger 11-15-2005, 08:01 PM new featherlite car hauler-- 30$ a year full coverage with USAA.
KS Toy 11-15-2005, 08:14 PM Yea, it sounds high. I have my insurance with Farmers as well. I made a copy of the title and took it in so they had the correct info. It cost me $38 a year for a 25' enclosed trailer. Maybe it varies from state to state.
griffon19 11-15-2005, 08:32 PM I JUST bought a trailer, and registered it with the DMV. Am i required to have insurance on it? I hadnt heard of this before? I have some time before it will be used much because it needs some work... Thanks for the info ahead of time.
B-rock 11-15-2005, 08:51 PM well my agent was not sure right away, so she called the underwrighters....... I told her she must be thinking of something else, she assured me she knows what i'm doing with the truck and jeep. Her father does the same thing with his truck/trialer and he has a cont. policy. Looks like i need to so some shopping around. thanks guy's.
SanDiegoCJ 11-16-2005, 09:40 AM Just called my farmers insurance agent about insuring my trailer. 16' gator. She asked what the trailer GVW rating is. Sorry, but that's FAWKING INSANE !!!!!! You need a different insurance company.
My 7,000 lb trailer is covered under my truck policy, at NO additional charge.
I do have a seperate policy just to insure it against theft, and that's $8.60
for 6 months.
welndmn 11-16-2005, 09:42 AM Why do you insure a trailer? theft? dammage?
dubbyx 11-16-2005, 10:10 AM no kidding... I was discussing insuring my trailer last friday with the agent I use and she hasn't been able to find anything to insure my trailer "as". She could find policies for travel trailers, semi's, motorhomes, but no just plain ol' car hauler or utility trailers.
what all are you guys getting for your "insurance"... what kind of theft/liability/replacement/etc.? what kind of deductibles/limits/exclusions?
Honkylips 11-16-2005, 11:01 AM I'm sure it varies state to state, but here in Colorado I pay $23 a year to insure my trailer for theft/damage. My two rig insurance covers any damage that may occur if my trailer decides to part company from said tow rig and tear some stuff up.
Eskimo 11-16-2005, 11:01 AM Nationwide was something like $30 to add a rider for my trailer, but that's all it covers..the trailer.. not what's on it.
if the trailer came disconnected from the tow rig and plowed into a house, my vehicle's std. liability covers that.
yager 11-16-2005, 11:56 AM yup i just verified this trailer coverage with my nationwide agent last week. I asked very specifically, if i tow my jeep (insured) with my trailer on my truck and i get in an accident am i covered. YES... The trailer is covered under my truck policy but I could get a rider policy (like eskimo) to cover it for full coverage including comprehensive, theft, damage, loss etc..
Find a new agent or read/understand your policy..
MattS 11-16-2005, 12:06 PM Farmers is your problem. I had them for about 5 years. I switched 3 years ago. After all the headaches and mess they put me thru I would never use them again. Not to mention I am saving about $1000 A YEAR since switching to Farm Bureau. I couldn't get them them to insure my 28 foot gooseneck AT ALL.
B-rock, call Country Companies. They are pretty liberal on their policy's. I saved a bunch on my junk.
Scoutillac 11-16-2005, 12:49 PM 30 bucks a year through Farmers, full replacement coverage on my 2001 18' flat deck.:smokin:
Eskimo 11-16-2005, 08:03 PM yup i just verified this trailer coverage with my nationwide agent last week. I asked very specifically, if i tow my jeep (insured)
You've got full coverage on the Jeep? How'd ya do that? Nationwide wouldn't write my cruiser for more than liability...
Haole 11-16-2005, 08:13 PM Just called my farmers insurance agent
I got rid of them after 15 years because they were too damned expensive.
Po' riggity 11-16-2005, 08:37 PM Im thinking of getting rid of them too, because they keep upping my premiums for the hell of it, but my agent is VERY good to me, so I hate to do it.

Sounds like some of you need to get a different insurance company.
I have full coverage on my CJ7 through State Farm. It's even covered off-road.
They paid off my previous CJ5 that I totaled off-road about 7 years ago.
They even covered the cost of all the mods I'd done to it. All I had to do was
show them the reciepts. I've checked other insurance companies and have
found some with cheaper rates, but none of them would cover me if I was
"off-road".
jeepguy1 11-18-2005, 09:13 AM Agreed, you are getting hosed man. I have a 2002 18ft hauler with 2 3500lb axles and it only costs me $50 a year through State Farm. Oh and to answer the question on why to insure a trailer. In Dallas, if you don't have it locked, bolted down, a chain ran around the axles, etc, you WILL get it stolen. $50 a year is not to bad for a trailer that cost me $1600 to buy.
tie6044 11-18-2005, 12:15 PM I have 4 trailers and the only one I insure is my 4 place enclosed snowmobile trailer. It is the only one that can really be damaged just sitting out back, hail, high winds or a falling tree branch could do a number on it. The others are just steel and really can't get too hurt unless I'm involved in an accident, in that case they are covered under the policy of the vehicle I'm towing them with.
yager 11-18-2005, 01:05 PM LOL no i dont have full coverage on the heep. Just the P/U trailer and heep just have liabiliy..
rpm4x4 11-18-2005, 05:37 PM I also have Farmers. I pay $9 a month as rider on my Dodge for a 38 foot gooseneck. I also have full coverage on my wheeler as I drive it daily. My agent is full aware of what I have as he has seen it first hand. I think your agent is a crook. Id move on. Your insurance is only as good as your agent.
Mike
dubbyx 11-18-2005, 08:12 PM okay, I guess what I really am asking... say you've got the truck insured, and the trailer insured... towing a load and something falls off the trailer... hits a car behind you. what kinda insurance covers that?
I was pulling a tractor on mine a while back and part of a pto shaft hit the road... was really glad nobody was behind me, but I have to admit it got me to thinking.
