I have a Ford tranny in my garage, but have no clue what kind it is. I am sure it is a 2 wheel drive tranny, but not sure on teh type. How do I distinguish between these two tranny's???

I believe the C4 has a removeable bellhousing, and the C6 is all one piece. Are there any data tags on it?

What other c trannies came in cars? It is a solid one piece setup I think, and there are some #'s cast into the ousing on it.

I'm no expert on auto tranny's so I can't help much. This is a C4 that came with my 302.

There was just a C5 which externally looks essentially like a C4. I am pretty sure what you have is a C6, if you know it is not a 4 speed auto or a really old 50's early 60s deal. Make sure it bolts to a small block if you are running a small block in your bronco, the majority of the C6's I see are the big block pattern. You got your name back!

Not all C4's use the removeable bellhousings. In fact these are harder to find and are very popular with draggers who put the C4 behind BFF's. Anyway, count the # of bolts on the pan. Also the C4 "should" have a square pan and the C6 will have diffrent kind of big "L" shape to it. Also the C6 is longer than the C4. My C6 is 20" long without the intermediate housing.

Look in '75-mid '80's Econolines for a C-6 that came behind the 302/351W. these are 2 wheel drive but the main thing is they are the proper case for the small-block. the output shaft and housing for the 4x4 married can be swaped over to the 4x2 tranny without any problems. also any fulsize Bronco with the 302/351W will have a C-6 prior to the intro of the AOD.

This is a 4x4 C6 with the small block case-

One thing I've noticed, the C6's seem to have a big number 64 welded on the top of the case.

Hey dustball, you wouldn't happen to have a kickdown cable laying around for one of those would ya? A buddy of mine swapped one into his 85 F150 and needs a kickdown cable, thanks..

Nah, I don't have one in my pile of parts but the u-pull-it place I go to has a few of them laying around.

Here's a pic of a big block C6-

There is a difference between shift levers for '79-earlier and '80-newer. The older ones use a lever that goes from back to front for P to D and the newer ones use a lever that goes from front to back for P to D.
