Hey guys! Next week I am going to be picking up my very first landcruiser. It is a 1969 FJ40. What I am getting is a rolling chassis. Most things are there, minus the body and engine. What can you guys tell me about this thing? It kinda fell into my lap, and I would like to know some more about it.
Thanks

Looks like you have about 1/3 of a project. Be prepared to shell out some $$$ for the rest of the parts.....
Since this is a bare bones project, I would consider planning upgrades, like axles, tranny, engine. Basically for a decent rig the only you have to work with is the frame, springs, possible the xfer case...Depending on what you plan on doing with cruzah, will depend on the cost of buildup......Good luck and congrads....:skull:

I agree with ranger. That sounds like a lot of hassle. I would find another one for parts somewhere. 1.25 trucks is better than the .25 that you have now.

It will give you opportunity to start from the ground up, tho.

As for info, go to IH8mud. Get a Haynes Manual. Get the Specter Off Road catalog.

Sell a kindney and anything else you don't need. You are looking at some $$$$

I hope you didn't pay for this? Sounds like you basically have a frame (no body, no engine, useless axles, useless tranny?), etc..

As other have said, plan to spend some $$$ depending on what you want to do.

If you essentially want to build a "all-Toyota" vehicle then it may be most cost effective to buy another cheap parts truck and combine the two. Also, if this is what you want to do it may be more cost effective to just buy a decent FJ40 for $4-$6K and abandon the frame.

If you have been hanging out here for awhile and want to put in Sprung-Over D60's a SM420 and V8 then you have a nice blank slate to build on.

I'm pretty much in the same situation now. I am building a '73 and am ending up having to buy new body, axles, springs, transmission, etc.... Expensive, but when it is built it will be bitchin'

Unless you are really committed to the time and money building from basically nothing but a frame you might want to "walk away".

Well guys, I actually picked this thing up for free. All I have to do is go get it. From what the owner tells me, it has a frame, brakes, suspension, axles, tranny, t case and thats all I think. I am not sure of the condition on any of this stuff. But its free, so who cares? I will probably help my brother build this up for his own use since I have a 1953 M-37 that is my own project. He likes 4-wheeling so what are some things you guys would recommend in the mod department? Thanks

Sounds like mine...welll only the year...
Mine has a body...:D

Do a SOA, SR, SM420....do what it says in my sig line :D

So far, out of everything that we have done to it, I like....it does need p/s though, and regearing and lockers, but otherwise its good on the rocks and not to bad for a dd...

If you want to build it right, front and rear 60's, locked of course. 350 EFI, NV4500, Atlas tcase, highangledrivelines, 4 link in the rear, coil over front, and beadlocked tires no smaller than 38's....That should be a good starting point!:D :skull:

I'll go take out a loan immediately!! Realistically, I dont think my brother has the kind of money to do that stuff yet. He is only 14. But we are getting a head start I suppose. A small block chevy swap with an sm465, maybe a dana 44 with a lockright and 14 bolt welded, and some boggers. That should be a good start for him. How well would a 3/4 ton dana 44 hold up on a cruiser? Thanks
