: Leaf Spring Clamp......?

Have any you tried to clamp the rear springs, just behing the spring hanger? Clamped with a bit of play, but enough to keep the main leaf from bending. Guess it would do about the same thing that a military wrap would do.....I suppose.

Nobody has a thought on this?

It's an old drag racing trick to clamp the front half of the leaf springs to prevent axle wrap. On my Nationals I have removed the bolts from all of my clamps except the front one just for that purpose.

I run clamps

............ as loose as possible:D

I know they limit flex

But the springs seem to last longer:D

I got that concept....I am running Waggy's on the rear, and there is a clamp about 8" or so behind the hanger. Problem is, when the tire is drooped and still has some traction, it just bends the spring in front of the clamp. So I am wondering if I moved the clamp a bit futher forward, it may help support the main leaf. I am sure everyone running leafs at one time or another has experienced the same thing...

Im constantly fawking with my leaf springs

Ive noticed the father out i put the clamp the faster it gets torn up to the point of falling off sometimes:mad:

I plan on trying this if I can find a good spring shop. On my rear leafs the main pulls away from the rest of the pack so it is handling all the torque. My second leaf wraps around a little so i can get a clamp REALLY close to the eye to keep everything in place, however I plan to leave a *little* bit of freedom in the clamp so the two leafs can move a little.

Exactly how the 44044's are. You gunna take them to a shop to have the clamp riveted before you try it?

If I knew where to get the parts (I guess all you need is a rivit and peice of flat stock) I would do it myself but I will take it to a shop when i have my rear end apart to redo mounts. My leafs are offset a few more inches then 44044's and I'm running the long side forward so I'm really worried about kinking these things. I was goint to build a 2 link traction bar (kinda like half a 4 link but centered on the axle) because this would help locate the axle front to back but I think the clamps will be more effective

i'm gonna try it. go for it, the worst that can happen is it won't work. the lost flex is worth the life of your spring.:D

On my stock Waggy springs there are two clamps one on each end about 4" from the spring eye in addition to the ones more towards the middle, so sounds like your springs are just missing these two clamps. Mine were loose and about ready to fall off when I picked them up from the wrecking yard, so I used a BFH to reposition them :)

I run a traction bar on the right side of the pumpkin, ladder bar style with a shackle at the front. I have a bend in the left spring, none on the right. The shackle does let the housing move forward a bit, but I suppose it could have enough control to keep the spring from moving to far. With the bar in the center, I am not sure it would have enough control over the movement at one side...

Thats exactly what I was thinking, I think the clamps or maybe even a custom military wrap leaf will be the best bet. My front springs are military wrap(BDS YJ) and flex great still and I can open clamps up

if you want the military effect without the military price try taking a junk springs of equal or greater length and lop the eyes off it.
place it on top of your existing main leaf - wahlaw an axle wrap/spring saving device w/minimal loss of droop. (of course it doesnt giv you the added safety featur the military gives).
somethin to try, seen it have an effect...
Also you only need to have the clamps on the forward facing side of the springs.

Yep, just like those..... Only I want to run one right behind the eye.

That is a good idea. Guess I could just loose one of the leafs and replace it with a long one on top of the main leaf like you said. It should push up against the eye of the spring and support the main leaf.:)
