He seems to know his shiat. if he can't do it he might know someone closer to ya.
Toy 4Runner Man 03-20-2002, 09:32 PM Sure, pick the one that I don't know! I know cable, ISDN, dial up, and networking to a minor part, but DSL, what is that. Here where I live, DSL isn't here yet.
badassjeepguy 03-20-2002, 09:35 PM dimitri, you still around your phone?
Dan-H 03-20-2002, 09:38 PM and why isn't this in chit chat :flipoff2:
realms 03-20-2002, 09:41 PM It's all in network Places. The wizard should take care of every thing. what windows are you running? did you get software with the Box (DSL)? It might help to buy Windows for Dummies or Networking for Dummies.
Flatty 03-20-2002, 09:41 PM Dan, kiss my ass :flipoff2:

yurtle 03-20-2002, 09:45 PM What modem did they give you, and has Earthlink been able to verify anything for you?
Also wondering what you are using to network the other computers. Is it Earthlink's home networking gateway, or your own rig?
Happy to help if I can.
Brian
Flatty 03-20-2002, 10:18 PM It is the earthlink setup. ZyXEL prestige 600 modem copnnected to a Lynksis router. The network is my own setup. I dopn't need my comp to read their comps, and vice versa, I just need them to have DSL off one router. It should be pretty basic, but I am a complete moron when ti comes to comps.
Dimitri
Sillyneck 03-20-2002, 10:22 PM fawkin plug it into the wall. put the network card in. plug the network cable from the card to the modem. turn all the sh!t on and either they gave you some junk live setup software...or.....well IP's and what not are probably way over your head :D
badassjeepguy 03-20-2002, 10:24 PM hey, i forgot to tell you, i had to wait 2 weeks before the phone company set up my dsl..... had it all installed and it wouldnt work.... when i called they said the phone company didnt set the shit up from there end yet and id have to wait.... this might be your case also
yurtle 03-20-2002, 10:27 PM Dump the router and get it working straight out of your PC first. You have too many variables involved right now. The Linksys is cool but I'll bet it is complicating your issue.
In the course of setting this up, did Earthlink ever ask for the MAC address of your network card? I know that the hardware address of your schtuff has to be registered with the Cable broadband folks, might be a similar situation with Earthlink.
Anyway, go straight from the PC Net card to the DSL modem and check it out. Trust me, get it working that way FIRST and then try to network it.
I'll check back in a bit.
Brian
xBabyJesus 03-20-2002, 10:28 PM Take the cheap router back to the store, and get a hub and an extra NIC. Get the DSL to work directly to your machine (WAY EASIER) as it probably uses dynamic IP's. Then share out the network connection, using Internet Connection sharing. Plug your sister's & mom's computers into the hub, along with a line to your spare nic.

That sounds fair.
I dented his Jeep, and he let me steel a bunch of his ideas, and helped me fab some front spring hangers. I think he even supplied the beer.
If he had a tube bender, I would dent his Jeep again for some tube bending :flipoff2: (as long as he supplied the beer).
Flatty 03-20-2002, 10:36 PM I am hooked up directly to the hub right now. The lynksis setup is not being used. I HATE THIS CRAP!!!!!! SOMEON HELP ME. THERE IS BEER AND FAB WORK IN IT FOR YOU!!!!

yurtle 03-20-2002, 10:46 PM Ok, lets go with this -
What lights are on, and how are they labeled-is it PWR, SYS, LAN and ADSL ?
Are you using a regular patch cord or a crossover patch
is it plugged in?
Had to ask, that is what I get every time I call tech support for all of my crap.
Flatty 03-20-2002, 10:54 PM OK, here goes, I have 6 lights. The PWR is lit up, the SYS islit up, the 100M is lit up. The following are not lit : 10M, DSL, ACT
I am running a crossover cable
and YES it is pugged in, but great question.

yurtle 03-20-2002, 10:58 PM I'm trying to find a manual for the modem. Zyxel doesn't list a 600. Is that the model number on the label?
http://www.zyxel.com/icons/supp/label.jpg
No filter on the line, right? You should at least see the DSL light blinking.

If you plug straight to your computer instead of the router, does it work?
Flatty 03-20-2002, 11:23 PM it is a prestige 645M Modem W/O 0.35
It is hooked up directly to my comp and modem
yurtle 03-20-2002, 11:28 PM Here's the user guide link
645M user guide (ftp://ftp.zyxel.com/download/public/p645m/document/p645m_v2.50_UsersGuide.pdf)
What did they give you for configuration info? Also, have you checked to make sure that your filters are installed correctly so you are not filtering out the DSL signal?
I'm about outa time. Will check in the AM. Good luck.
Brian
Flatty 03-21-2002, 07:59 AM DAmn still can't get it to work, some on someone help me
Dimitri
tdavis 03-21-2002, 08:31 AM Sure, but it will be later tonight.. Considering what I do for a living, this should be a cake walk. :D
I live in the East bay. (Pinole).
duane_nv 03-21-2002, 08:32 AM try hooking your puter to the modem w/o the x-over cable
use a regular cat 5 cable, and you should be good to go.
x-overs are gret for connecting 2 computers w/o the router
but with the modem and or router/switch you should use
a straight cord.

Get rid of the crossover cable and use a regular cable. That is your problem. As for the Linksys router, have no idea, have not used one. I jsut use a simple 4 port linksys hub with a switchable "upload" port that will handle the crossover duty for me. Plug each of my 2 comps into the the hub, plug the modem into the "upload" port and switch it to "upload" mode and then everything works. The hub is like $20. Of course this way requires an extra IP for each machine, which you may need to be paying for.
I'll take a tube frame buggy and a 2 cases of Guiness, thanks.
IronBenderII 03-21-2002, 09:51 AM Hey Flatty, if you are still having problems with it this weekend, let me know. Maybe on the way back up North I'll stop by and take a look.

welndmn 03-21-2002, 10:06 AM Makes me kind of like dial up :D
Wish i could help ya, but i know Jack about DSL
yurtle 03-21-2002, 11:40 AM Check the instructions, but I am pretty sure that they specify the use of a crossover cable. You only use a straight cable with this modem if it is going into a hub and the PC is also connected to the hub.
I'm betting it is one of the following, in this order;
1. You are not connected to a DSLAM and are not receiving DSL service after all
2. You have service, but there is an issue with your lines or filter configuration that is drawing the signal down. Unplug all the phones in the house, and if possible connect the modem straight to the point of entry for the phone line.
3. There is a configuration error in the modem. This would prevent you from making a connection, but the fact that your DSL light is out makes me suspect #1 or #2.
BTW, The lights that are out: 10M is not important, ACT will blink while data is transferring. Until the DSL light is on you got nada. Can you ping the modem from your PC, at least?
Have you called Earthlink yet?
BTW, I just like to say DSLAM and stuff like that. I'm about as much of an expert as the next guy on this.
SMART ASS 03-21-2002, 12:02 PM CAN SOMEONE SAY GENERAL CHIT CHAT
Flatty 03-21-2002, 03:10 PM No I can't but I can say kiss my ass.
