5 lugs = F150 Extended Cab Dana 44HP
8 lugs = F250 Dana 44HD

Do the 3 extra studs make it HD? or is that a typo?

The three extra studs make it easy to tell them apart. The 8-lug axle also has dual piston brakes and slightly heavier axle tubes (or so I've read). The 8-lug stuff (knuckle out) can be swapped onto a 5-lug axle.
