Does anyone know if a D53 carrier will take 30 spline side gears from a d44? I searched the topic and found nothing, I know that 53's arent all that hardcore, but ya gotta love em for poor man's low gears. Anyone have any experience with the 53 at all?
thanks

Don't know about the D53, but i do know the D41 will take a lock-rite from a D44. Maybe a lockrite from a D60 would work. How big is the ring gear on a D53?

I havent actually measured the ring gear , but it is almost the same as a 44, I hope this works, if it does.... time for a d53 front. Also, any one done brake conversions on a 53 before (gunna go disk, since it will be cheaper than the stock wheelcylinders)
thanks

You are probably not gonna find any useful info on the 53 on this board. Although I did a rear disk swap on my rear 70 for $150 with off the shelf parts. Should be fairly easy to do. Do a search and see what comes up for disk swap with semi float axles.

I'm assumin that the 53 is about as strong as a 44 w/ 19 spline shafts, right?? the only reason i'm not ditchin it and goin for a 14 bolt / d44 is the gearing , the best I can do for a 14bolt is mid 4's but I got 5.38's in the 53 already. It is either the front 53, or a 27 and I know that the 27 won't take it. Anyone else got some ideas on stock available low gears? as for the disk conversion, looks easy, just use a ford rotor, GM caliper and bracket, fab some shit andit is good to go. Also, and anyone rate the strenght of a 53 compared to a 44? Has to be close doesnt it?
BTW, i'm gunna be runnin a 4.3, auto, and t case from a 96 blazer I think, prob w/ a divorved NP 202 or 205 , rollin on 36's anyone think it'll live?

I have a shit pile of 53 stuff. Don't know much about it other than what I can look up in my parts books.

Got any stuff for Timken rears? If so, I know some folks looking for that stuff. Seems like there's always someone looking for timken or D53 stuff on willystech.

D53 front? Never heard of that one, you sure it's a D53? What is it out of? The D25, D27, D30 and D53 all have a similar looking cover with straight sides and round tops and bottoms. The D53 is a lot bigger than the others though. I assume it has a bigger ring gear than a 44 since the model number is bigger, but I could be wrong about that. (I do know thw D41 has a bigger ring gear than a D44 and a D25 has a bigger ring gear than a D27) I thought all D53s were rear axles with 10 spline shafts. Don't know if the shaft is the same size as the 10 spline D44/D41 or if it's bigger.

I am trying to BUILD a d53 front, as far as I know they don't exist, here is my situation, i need low gears for the willys, and need them cheap, have lots of 53's around in the yard, 5.38 gears for cheap. That ia why I want to find out if I can put the 30 spline sidegears in, so I can use inner and outer shafts from a d44 front, some halfassed together tubes and closed knuckles to make a 53 front. I know it is probably not worth the work, but what the hell, beats buyin NEW parts !!!! On the timkin rears, I can get 2 of em for $300 from some old guy, (whole parts trucks ) if any one wants em, they are in plymouth NH, PM me if u want em,
thanks

All I can say is try it and see. If having a working differential isn't important to you you could always weld a D44 side gear in there.
