View Full Version : AX15 Daily Driver Questions

Ive got an 89 4x2 commanche with the 4.0, and ba10/5 behind it.
that being said it probably comes as no suprise to you that the trans is pretty hurting.

I want to swap in an ax15, now ive got the basics but theres a few more things that i dont know and thats why im here.

1. Will i be able to reuse my clutch presure plate/Slave cylinder with the ax15?
2. as far as transmission mount goes do i need to get a new one or can i reuse mycurrent garbage.
3. other then jeeps is there any other vechiles the ax15 came in (i believe ive read on here that the dakota trucks came with it, and if they did is it a pretty easy swap.)
4. Anyone know any good rebuilders i could get a rebuilt ax15 from for 'cheap', im looking localy but this kind of thing isnt exactly the most popular thing my area.
5. Thanks and is there anything else im missing/ has anyone had direct exeprince in this exact swap?

I'd look for an AX15 out of an XJ or a YJ or TJ, 94+ (IIRC, may be 93.) You *REALLY* want to get the external slave cylinder setup. Earlier models came with an evil internal slave setup that seems prone to failure, and you have to pull the trans to replace it.

Given how much you're gonna be tinkering, there's no way I'd even think about doing this swap without putting a new disc and pressure plate assembly in.

I suspect you'll also need a new mount, maybe a different crossmember (depends on your fab skills.) Fortunately, the AX15 mount is way cheaper than the BA10/5.

Thanks for the reply, local for me is toronto canada, I just dont want to pay an arm and a leg, but i know thats not possible anyway. as far as the crossmember goes, im sure i could take care of that fairly easily. Im just newish to this swap, and not really to drive train swaps altogheter, If i can find something that i have to pay even 100 bones just to get it shipped, it would be worth it.

<grin> Make me an offer, then. I've got an AX15 I pulled from a 92 YJ (yeah, I know. It's got the EVIL internal slave.) Was working fine when pulled in September.
