Subject: The Rubicon Trail and Eldorado Nat'l Forest lawsuit
From: Friends of the Rubicon
If'd you like to be current on what's happening with the Rubicon Trail and the Eldorado Nat'l forest lawsuit stuff, please see below.
If after you read this you still need more info, please email (jeepndel@goldrush.com) me or contact Don Klusman.
Right now there are NO maintenance/repair trail closures that would affect a planned run other than winter time conditions and snow. The trail is not designed for wheeling during winter months.
We are, however, under real scrutiny on the trail because we are in the middle of a new lawsuit filed against the Eldorado National Forest
LAWSUIT:
A lawsuit has been filed (as of February 12, 2002) against the Eldorado National Forest for a lot of the Georgetown and Eldorado County area (especially OHV use in the Rock Creek area). It's messy. It does affect the Rubicon and many other trails. For sure, now is the time to get involved and get your name in the fight. Join organized recreation (such as your local or state club AND the BlueRibbon Coalition) so we can use your membership to fight these battles. Don Klusman has posted articles about the lawsuit and our Cal4wheel.com web site has the suit and a current update. The best way for you to help is to donate to the cause AND to join Friends of the Rubicon (www.friendsoftherubicon.com).
DONATE to fight the lawsuit! Visit www.delalbright.com/rubicon_donate.htm to help with the fight. This is the time to get involved like never before.
LATEST SCOOP:
Please see our Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR) web site for the latest scoop, work dates, and other information about our work on keeping the Rubicon open, etc.

TRAIL ACCESS:
Best times to wheel the Rubicon are July, August and September. June is ok in some dry years. Earlier months are usually subject to snow conditions and we don't want to wheel during spring run off as that is what caused the gate idea to crop up last year.
Even during work days and work weekends we will always try to have a way in and out of the trail for you. BUT you will see our Temporary Road Closed signs posted on the Rubicon McKinney (county road) portion of the trail. The current lawsuit affects our potential access from the Loon Lake side -- but so far, we're still able to get thru to the trail on that end. McKinstry and Wentworth Springs are the other ways into the main portion of the trail.
ORGANIZATION:
Del Albright is Trail Boss of the Friends of the Rubicon. Both Placer County and Eldorado County are involved as the trail is a county road running through both counties. FOTR is an informal coalition of trail users (no dues). We meet once a year. Most of our work is done through email and on the ground with summer work projects.
WORK WEEKENDS:
There are no work weekends planned right now. We've complete our trail work for the summer/fall of 2001. Great job by everyone involved. New work weekends will be announced via the Friends of the Rubicon email list (see below).
SANITATION and SIGNS:
These are our two biggest issues right now. We are in the process of developing sanitation facilities as well as trail signs to ensure folks know where the trail is. You can get involved in this by joining FOTR.
