I'm gettin ready to buy my t-case, and since there are a ton of D300s out there i'm lookin for advise. I know the 1980 Cjs had a shorter rear output which would help with driveline angle a little, but am i gonna run into any problems with aftermarket? i'm plannin on getting the tera 4:1 eventually, will this work with the short output? any other differences? suggestions? thanks.

Not sure about the 4:1, but I think the AA 32 spline shaft upgrade is only for the long version.

I have heard that the early (shorter) versions actually had a stronger rear output shaft than the longer ones did ...something about one having the speedo gear machined into the shaft and the other is splined to the shaft......either way they both have a 26 spline output..
As far as the AA 32 spline rear kit All you keep from the original case is the speedo drive (and you can't use the early speedo drive in the AA kit).......

I have heard that the upgrade won't work with the short tail shaft d300 as well. I have never heard why though? I thougth that the kit replaced the tailshaft and the tailshaft housing so what is the difference between the the cases?Someone clear this up for me because I have the short version and even though I dont' think I'm gonna break it with my 6 banger, it would be nice to upgrade someday.Later:smokin:

Someone has to know the answer to this! Why would it matter if you are swapping all tailshaft components anyways?

I have both versions sitting out in the shop..... the cases are 'zackly the same......... I think there is confusion here because If you replaced a Long version 300 with the AA kit you would not need to re-do the driveline,
wheras a short version with the AA kit you would need a new driveline and a new speedo drive......
Either way the 300 is strong stock...

go look at the bolt pattern for the two tail shaft housings.

The AA kit DOES not work on the 1980 model 300 its a fact

fact #2 long snout version is cut for speedo gear

fact #3 you can get a 4.1 for “short snout” 300’s

as of AA catalog#-33

fact #2 Umm so is the short shaft d300. At least mine is!

and what makes it a fact is all I want to know? Are the tailshaft housing bolt patterns different? If not I dont' see any reason that it wouldn't work.:skull:

Here is the deal.....

I have a short Dana 300 its a Scout, but that is not the point in this post.

AA DOES, repeat DOES make a short rear output upgrade for a Dana 300. Here is AA's part # 50-3034. The kit has the same length shaft as the longer kit, but the bolt pattern is slightly different. This allows a nut to be placed on a supplied threaded rod (short) that is under the speedo gear.
My speedo works much better ( not that I cared anyway) than before with this kit also. I ordered mine with the CV yoke instead. This is also the same yoke as the Atlas, so I guess this is an Atlas shaft too?? It require thet my rear shft be shortened by 1.5" , but with that kind of strength it was worth it for me.

Anyway if you are using this for the Scout Dana 300 you must remove the caged needle bearing (part # 300515)that is installed inside the drive gear side of the new shaft. Anyway this is the only difference in the installation of the 1980 Scout 300 vs. the 1980 CJ version.Hopefully this will inform the uninformed.......

True, true, true ...

The 'shortie has a symetrical circular rear retainer bolt pattern which was later changed to a 'Texas' pattern when the 'dial-a-speedo-gear' on the long shaft version sometime during 1981.

One COULD put the AA upgrade retainer on a 'shortie' but only if they welded an expanded seat area onto the the 'shortie' case, then drill and tapped the single 'Texas' bolt hole outside the earlier circular pattern.

You could possably make up for the expense of this machine work by selling the 'shortie' shaft as they are in demand.

Here is a pic of mine..

Again, this is a Scout 300, but the rear bolt pattern is the same as a 1980 Jeep D300.
