: Clark 5spd swap in for NP435?

I've heard you can swap in a clark 5spd directly for an NP435. Supposedly the bolt pattern and spline count match up, only thing you need is a new x-member. Anyone done this or know if it's true? By the way it's going in my 76 F-250 with the 390 and a divorced NP205

Usually a different bolt pattern requires redrilling the bellhousing. Possibly the center index hole will need to be milled out. Getting a clutch disk with different splines is a simple enough matter. The Clark's pilot tip might need to be machined down.
Clarks came with several different bolt patterns and lots of ratios. Are you looking for overdrive or direct 5th?

If you can find one that was originally behind an FE motor (352,360,390 etc) than it should bolt right up. You'll probably have to get the Clark bellhousing and you might have to take the clutch/flywheel off the donor truck. Should work fine with a divorced tcase. just have to shorten the intermediate shaft (or whatever that's called) and as you said fab up a new crossmember.

I want the overdrive Clark. As for finding one behind an FE block I doubt I could be that lucky considering this is only a rumored swap in that apparently very few if any people have done. And I know I can't pull one with the bell because the clarks came behind diesels for the most part in 2.5 ton trucks.

We have a 76 4x4 2.5 ton F-600 with a 360 and 5spd at our shop in petersburg va. The only thing that we are gonna use off of the truck are the axles and t-case everything else is gonna be parted or junked. I would imagine that it is a clark 5 spd in the truck but i do not know for sure. What are the defining characteristics of this trans? I can check this afternoon and get back with ya on monday. I will be leaving by 230 so if you can tell me how to id this trans please do it promptly.

I have a 4WD&OR article on the Clark scanned. It's got several pictures and a chart of different gear ratios. Clark article (http://66.55.28.71/jeeps/Clark5sp.pdf) Does this trans have an OD 5th? Even if it's not a Clark, it should still work unless it's absolutely huge.

Yep I'm looking for one with the deep 1st and the overdrive. Although if memory serves me froma discussion I had with a local tranny guru you can somehow swap in the overdrive into any of the clarks. Let me know which 5spd it is that you have and how much you'd be willing to let it and the bell housing go for. :) Give me a call with what type of tranny it is if you can't find out and post it today. I'll PM you my number

You aren't going to find a Clark with a 7-8:1 1st gear AND overdrive. The countershaft on at least older Clarks is bolted together with the countergears for 4th and 5th being switchable. But you still need the proper input shaft, which only comes with the 280VO. There some older (40s-70s) OD Clarks, all with similar ratios to the 280VO. If you take one of the other ones and somehow "swap in overdrive", you might not like the jump from 3rd to 4th very much. How does 2.13 or even 2.48 up to 1.00 grab you? Too much to be drivable, really. Best bet is either a 280VO, or one of the direct versions with a ring & pinion swap.

I have a Clark 280VO I could sell.
280VO (H) 5.98/3.50/1.86/1.00/0.80/5.04R Clark '68-85 up
It came from a Ford F600, 4x4 dump with a divorced NP205. The stickout shaft is thicker and longer than the NP435. The bolt pattern is not the same as the Ford small or large block engines I know. It must be for a large truck 6 cyl. It seems to be in very good shape and has the yoke for the short divorced drive shaft already to go.

ok heres an idea and someone shoot me down quick on this one....... since first gear is clearly not streetable, is there anyway to get the 280V or similar and change the first gear in it to the deeper 7-8:1?

I'd agree I far as I know you can't swap the 7-8:1st into a tranny with OD 5th, if you price out the parts you'd need to buy to swap OD into a non OD you'd be better off looking for another tranny I think...

Any body know the history of the 8:1 first clark trannies?
I heard the reason its hard to find the 8:1 clark was produced exclusivly for white freight?

Unless I'm mistaken, the 370 has the same bell housing pattern as the 429 and 460. Not the same as the 390.
